Scam!!!!!!!!!!Don't reply and do report it as scam.
|
No, it's not.
Likely they would send you a bogus check for far over the amount of the item, and instruct you to give the difference to the 'agent' who would be picking up the goods. I'd ignore it. Or simply tell them that they have to show up in person and pay cash. I guarantee you'll never hear from them again! |
That's a scam...
I sell a lot on CL, and I never reply to "Do you still have this" A lot of people want you to write back so they can get your e-mail address and add you to a junk mail list. This is also why I have an e-mal address that is only used for Craigslist selling. I put in my ad that if it is still up, it is available, ,and I will not reply to anyone asking if I still have it. I also state I will remove the ad when the item is sold, Which I do. Some people will require you include a word in the subject of your reply so they know you are not spam, and actually read the ad. Any time anyone asks you to remove the ad, you know it's a scam.. NEVER do business on CL with money order or check, or shipping. ALWAYS do busines in person, cash only. |
I sell a good bit of things on CL, and I love making these scammers pay! I email them back, play along though I never give them my phone number, get their giant fat checks, typically well over a $1000 over the listed price of the item. When I get the check (which they normally spend big $$ to overnight) I tack it up on the wall in my office, with the dozens of other checks, take a pic and email it to them...it makes me laugh!
Just a little amusement for an old lady like me! Annie |

If you want to read some really good pranks pulled on scammers, check out 419eater.com. Some of the archived stores are hilarious... People taking pictures with fish on their head and such just trying to get their hands on money.. . |
I was taught this trick by an old man in my town who bought some very old duck decoys from me, he had close to a 100 checks from scammers.
Like I said, it is just fun for me, and it makes me laugh that they spend money to overnight me checks. Twice I have pretended I didn't get their check and they overnighted another one...ha ha on them! It is bothersome though, to wade through all those scammers emails from CL just to find one legitimate buyer! My oldest daughter recently told me there are even scammers on the Jobs page, they offer you a good job but want you to have a credit check done and route you to a website where they can steal your info, that is scary!! Any email that has "please kindly" in it is a scam.

Every single time I post something on craigslist I get a variation of

Usually I can tell they're scams before I even open the email because of their distinctly non american sounding name. Which is a dead giveaway for me since I live in the south in a rural area with 4 last names, lol. |
Stilted language sort of lets you know right off that English is NOT their first, or primary, language!

this is a SCAM. happened to us same way - stop any contact with them.
|
In my experiences with TTY, usually they type their message to a call center, and the call center rep reads it to you over the phone, and types your response back to them.
|
OR...continue on and play the game to see if you can catch them up...it is fun!

Sometimes you really DO want the item and need to know if they still have it. |

What happens if you deposit the checks?

If you deposit or CASH them and spend the money, then when the check BOUNCES a day or two later YOU are responsible for the money |
Check with your bank. My old bank charged a $30 fee if the check you deposited bounced. I used to take the tenant's deposit check and first few months rent checks to the bank they were drawn on until there was a good history.

I have never bought anything on Craigslist, but have sold some things.
What exactly is suspect about asking if you still have the item? When we sold things, we would have people say they wanted the item, and would be there at a certain time. In my mind, I might be sure they were coming, but they haven't actually seen the item, and until the money is in my hands and the item is gone, it's still kinda for sale. So, should someone email to ask if I still have the item, I would tell them someone is coming, but if the deal falls through, I'll call them. Maybe I'm just not understanding this -- I've never sold anything by mail, though. |

I'll have to keep that in mind. |
I sent an email a couple weeks ago to ask if a person still had a rabbit in which I was interested. Said they sold it but the ad was still up. Not everyone removes their ad promptly which causes many people to ask if --- is still available.
I can see not responding if they don't ask for the item by name though. |
