Mamita...I typed, then deleted, then typed, then deleted. I have decided to leave it at that. The wonderful people of HT know how much they have helped me and I am eternally in their debt. I was ready to put Dude down and they gave me hope, and that hope has turned into so much more. :-)

His behavior might improve if he's neutered. I, too, would suggest a breed rescue.
Now, this isn't meant to be hurtful but if you're home so little do you really think it's best to own any dog? Cats might be better in your situation because they tend to do far better when home alone so much.

I am not gone 20 hours a day. I work normal work days...but if you figure you have to kennel the dog anytime you aren't watching him (including when sleeping) he only gets to get out and romp for like an hour in the morning when I am getting ready, then a few hours when I get home before I go to bed. Our other dog does not need to be locked up when not being watched or when we are sleeping. Hope that makes sense. I just talked to someone from this site and it sounds like they may have the perfect home for Tank. Please don't be judgmental, until you are in my situation you have no idea what it is like. If I could make it all work I would.

Mastiff X Pit Bull = Bandog, a fad "breed", OK when done with care and top quality animals, mostly a disaster in practice.

You really should be speechless since the ad clearly stated:
The only rehoming fee will be that you will have to pay to get him neutered before you take him home.
Take the time to read before posting snarky comments. She is asking the new adopter to pay to have him neutered not to pay to adopt the dog, nor is she asking anyone here to donate anything toward Tank.
Linsay stick to your guns on the vet reference and home visit. It scares off most of the crazies on Craig's. It takes 30 seconds to call the vet and if the home visit goes well, make the vet neuter appt then and there, make sure they know the cost and can pick him up on that day and time.
If you cannot find someone a breed rescue might be the way to go.

He's not housebroken if he pees/poos when you're not around. For that fact alone, I wouldn't take him.

Agree with that statement. A dog can't be considered housebroke and shouldn't be advertised as such if he doesn't hold it when he needs to, but also cruel if you are not making an attempt to get him outside at least 3 times a day to go.
Dude would probably miss his companion dog, especially while he's recovering from his surgery. Dogs really bond to each other. I'd think twice before you rehome him. It's so hard on a dog to lose his family. He's probably happier with you all than he would ever be with anyone else. Just sounds like someone should put in the effort to give him a couple long walks a day. Surprised that you wouldn't be walking your dogs everyday anyway since they need the exercise when they don't have a fenced yard to run around in. A tired dog is a good dog.

I understand your position and why your doing what your doing. But as a dog behaviorist I can tell you that he is getting even with you. He has too much energy and you spend your time with Dude and Tank is jealous because he is not getting time with his pack members. He is bored and you both are paying for it.
Personally I would see if some one could come over and excerise him for 20 min or so while you are at work. Get him a kong toy stuff it with peanut butter and treats and throw it in the freezer before you go to bed. When you leave in the morning put it in his kennel. When you come home take him outside and throw a ball or what ever doggie games he likes, play for a good 45 min to an hour and where that big boy out. Then close the doors to the spare rooms, baby gates if you have to and have him in the same room as the family until bed time. Days off take to a dog park or even for just a ride in the car. Take him for a walk let him burn off some steam but make him part of the family again.
One of my dogs had the same type of home, they worked all day and she was locked up. They let her out and she would pee on the couch. She tore up their kids toys. They asked me if I would watch her when they left on vacation. I treated her like one of my pack members. When they came back they said they were taking her to the pound, they tried CL it didn't work. I said she can stay with us. She is never crated but I do exercise her and she sleeps with me. She no longer pees and poops in the house and she never touches things that don't belong to her. It took a lot of energy on my part in the beginning but she is an excellent dog now.
You can do this! You love them right? If it was your child acting up you wouldn't send him to a new home you would help him to fix his problems. I have faith in you.
Also check with the local shelters sometimes they offer subsidized neuturing. Ask the vets offices if they know of neutering help. Then get out there and play with your dog. It would be good for both of you!

Any donations need to be discussed OFF the board... We are already pushing the limits as far as site rules are concerned with the prior donation threads.
