What's your state's symbols?

I live on the border of 3 states and own property in 2 of them. These 3 states share a lot of state symbols but also have some unique ones of their own.

Mostly Maryland is into state symbols-

sport-jousting. The area I come from takes it seriously and I went to school with some families that are really into it.

fish-rockfish, it's the same as Virginia's since they share the bay but in Virginia it's called a striped bass. It's good eating no matter what you call it.

crusteacean- blue crab of course, see above.

dog- Cheasapeak Bay retreiver

cake-Smith Island cake-it's finger lickin' good

reptile-diamondback terrapin, in WV it's the timber rattlesnake.

What are your state's symbols?

Tinknal -I love honeycrisp apples. They are great for eating.
West Virginia's apple is the Grimes golden. I use it in my applesauce along with a yellow delicious. It makes a sweet applesauce so we don't need to use sugar in it.
But for eating, the honeycrisp is one of the best. And the morel is the best mushroom going- of course that's all my opinion:nanner:

The Honeycrisp was developed at the University of Minnesota.

Maryland likely got their urge to joust from waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when Sir Walter Scott wrote Ivanho?. The book caught on over here like a storm, and there were jousting societys from Maryland on South. The North had a few also, But in the south men were born nearly on horseback, and they tried to live a medieval type of life. It got so regimented that when the Civil War started Many regiments in both sides, but especially in the south went to war with spears. In the early days, the South didnt have many carbines for its cavelry. They armed themselves with sawed off shotguns, Sawed off flintlocks, and in alot of cases those spears that they used lance fashion on horseback, in which they were very proificiant haveing practiced with them for years befor the war. The north, couldnt hardly set a regiment on horseback and keep it there, and when they saw a bunch of riders approching them like knights, they didnt feel the need to stay and take a spear, and so they ran. Later that would all change.
