We used to make oatmeal pie and Grape Nuts pie when I was young. We called them A Poor Man's Pecan Pie.
I love Oatmeal cookies. I don't use oatmeal in meatloaf. I use saltines or bread crumbs. I really don't like it with oatmeal. My MIL used to do that. It is fun to see how everyone eats the same food differently. Thanks for all of your responses. CS |
in cookies....
...oops LOL |
I like the old fashioned tyoe that is rolled rather thickly, and takes a long time to cook. Best with some fruit (fresh or dried) and a bit of either honey or brown sugar and a little bit of half and half. A pinch of salt too during the cooking process.
The other way is my favorite though, and it is oat bran rather than the whole oats. I cook it in the microwave with skim milk instead of water, and a pinch of salt. A couple of tablespoons of fruit preserves, my faves are blackberry, raspberry, guava, or wild maine blueberry. I have been known to have cherry preserves too every now and again. |
I add a pinch of brown sugar, a tablespoon of coconut oil and two tablespoons of milled flax seed.

Twice a week, year round...boiled slowly in water that has a little salt in it, dish it up when it's cooked, but still very moist, add milk and sugar.

Wow, I was sure other people liked savory oatmeal. Guess hubby is right...we are weird!

Love old fashioned oats in homemade granola with yogurt (homemade if I have it). I really love the steel cut oats and I used to eat it with brown sugar and butter but since I'm diabetic now it is Splenda (I know, I know!) and some cinnamon and a touch of butter (can't give that up!) I do like instant oatmeal when I'm in a hurry and there's a ton of things you can add, depending on your mood to liven it up.

oats, flax meal, water, nuke 90 seconds, mix in any dried fruit available, milk

Aside from the fact that most of us have entirely too much glucose/insulin coursing in our system, grains are particularly hard on the human gut and connect to a host of disorders.
Since I have Crohn's disease, and my gut is even more fragile, I've given them up entirely. I miss oatmeal. :( |

"My husband eats his with sugar, milk and crumbled bacon." Alright now, pretty much anything is do-able with bacon to me. :D That's one I may have to try yet. I'm a grits girl, I guess. The saltier and butterier, the better! |
I usually eat oatmeal twice a week for breakfast. My favorite way is cooked with craisins, add a couple of shakes of pumpkin pie spice and a spoon of apple butter, then pour milk over. I also like baked oatmeal but that takes more time to make.

I like mine with sugar free pancake syrup and toasted pecans. I didnt like it much until I thought of making it this way.
|
After cooking, stir in a mushed up banana and add a small handfull walnuts. Or a handful of blueberries. So good!

Hot oatmeal in the fall and winter. We like steel cut better, but regular is o.k. too. With milk, maple syrup, and frozen peaches. Or whatever other frozen fruit we have, but peaches are really the best.
In the summer and spring made into granola with fresh fruit and milk. |
Instant, Maple and Brown sugar flavor -- slightly runny (water -- no milk)
Usually with a side of toast with real butter |
Lately I've been eating 4 or 5 times a week along with coffee for breakfast, just finishing up now in fact: 1 cup dry "quick" (smaller crumbles so more surface area and faster cooking) style, handful of raisins, couple dollops cinnamon, 1 3/4 cup water, mix up, nuke 2 minutes. Then add whatever fresh fruit is handy, today cut up a few strawberries and a banana (blueberries, blackberries, etc sometimes), slosh some 1% milk into it, stir up good and eat. Lukewarm by then at best with all the extras. No problem passing up yummy fats like bacon, sausage, ham, etc when I start out packing that mess down.
|
I used to eat it with brown sugar, but lately have been leaving that out and just cooking with water and afterward adding raisins, sunflower kernels, etc--whatever is handy. I also like to just dab my tongue onto the dry oats & munch-- a habit learned 'playing horse' as a kid & still like. Also I tend to get distracted & discover a bowl of cold cooked oatmeal in the microwave about lunchtime, so sit watching the noon news & eating it with a fork.

Butter, milk and salt. I am not a fan of sweets... but everyone else in my family thinks I am gross so I make theirs with butter, milk and a little maple syrup.. maybe some brown sugar and/or cinnamon. |
I only eat it when it's chilly and when I have really ripe bananas. I also smoosh banana in the old-fashioned rolled oatmeal after it's cooked with a sprinkle of cinnimon. yum!
