"The 4-H leader was angrier than I was on the day of the demo. Our group got bumped at the last minute because someone in charge suddenly decided there would be more interest in karaoke than a goat presentation. The 4-H leader has already gone and complained to the fair board, but I don't know yet what the result will be there. I'm hoping the person who dropped the ball will at the very least acknowledge the screwup."
I hate to say it, but there are times when being a crufty old man can be an advantage. Faced with a situation where I was told my group was going to have to go on early before everyone was prepared, or not at all, and it wasn't to help out some other group, I would have very carefully explained which part of his own anatomy the director had placed his head in, and that unless he managed to extricate it right then, the event he had suddenly scheduled in preference would be accompanied by the chorus of some crying girls and angry mothers screaming his name.
I don't blame the 4-H leader for not being as aggressive as I would have been. The leaders for kids are focused on promoting good behavior and relations, and can be thrown for a loop when someone presents as the hindquarters of an equine and needs a good dressing down.
