How close are your neighbors? Sounds to me like someone has installed one of those supersonic bark stoppers.

Pacing, standing still & listening in different directions... sounds like you may have gotten a mouse in the walls. Although the speculation on this thread is much more interesting.

My dogs will go on Alert if they hear the ice falling off the barn or from trees in the woods. After a snow storm or ice, it will take them a while to figure out it is ice and not the devil. Good luck - hope they are OK.

It's not just inside, though. They're doing it as much outside as in.

Funny thing, my little schnoodle was doing the same things yesterday. Wanting to go out like it was a big emergency, then stopping short at the door. When I got her to go out, she stayed on the porch looking into the distance acting afraid of something. Barking at nothing, not usually a barker, acting weird all day.

Well.... my chee hwah hwah was barking at the noises made by the bread machine earlier. I haven't used it since we got him, and he'd never seen it before.

Tracy, hope your pups calm down soon. I know it's got to be dismaying not knowing the source of their upset.

dogs often sense carbon monoxide in the air or other gas's that we can't smell. maybe you should check that? maybe the dog is asking you to please go outside with you and stay out if it is dangerous inside?

I would not rule out visiting spirits either. They have to live/stay somewhere when not roaming around. We are living in the latter days prior to the return of my Saviour, Jesus; thus, the evil spirit/demons certainly have a focus of doing all the damage they can before He gets here.

Not long ago I walked out into the back to check on our bucks. Both were standing "alert" staring at the forestry in back of their pen. As I looked in that direction, I heard a loud "sigh"; then nothing (no movement of limbs or russle of leaves). After that loud sigh, the bucks were comfortable and came to me.

I ALWAYS make use of my Savior's name in situations like this, i.e. "In Jesus' name, all demons and evil spirits are bound, forbidden to participate in anything that goes on in my son's dream states, in my dream states, in this room & this trailer & all creatures on and in this property." (We Christians have access to that powerful name and I do not hesitate to make use of it when I feel the need.)

The weekend before last my dog was like this. He's an outdoor Great Pyrenees who weighs about 110 pounds and is not timid. Now it's a breed characteristic that they bark a lot. But even for him he would not shut up. It was broad daylight on a calm, sunny early afternoon and I was outside in the workshop building my daughter's chicken hutch. I finally got tired of it and walked over to hush him up. Then I realized that every dog for what seemed like a half a mile around was barking as well.

This went on for at least an hour. Could not hear or see any apparent explanation so I walked my property over and a part of the property behind me and still could not see or hear any reason for every dog in the area to keep barking on and on and on. This is not like them. Not for an hour any way. Even though it was daylight and I couldn't see anything to be concerned about their behavior started to weird me out. I finally got the pistol out of the truck and belted it on and laid a bush axe on the workbench near to hand then went back to work. Never saw anything, never heard anything, never could figure out what had them all so upset. Finally after another hour they gradually settled down.

Now the next day when the front came through and it got quite dark and oppressive before it rained hard enough to put out Hades I didn't hear a peep out of any of them.

Some things we just don't ever get an explanation for.

Alan, same thing happened here last night. Did not get a wink of sleep. LGD barked, growled very low, and as very unhappy, as was my indoor/outdoor dog an Australian Kelpie. Checked what I could with a flashlight, did not see anything. Sheep seemed fine.
Neighbors dogs did the same thing, just would not settle.

We have quite a bit of snow here, and it makes sounds carry a long way, so maybe there was something that I could not hear that they could. They acted the same as the time when a bear came through the property, so maybe they could smell the musky scent of one close by?

How are things Tracy?

Post on rumbling: I've been on medical leave for the past week and I've heard a lot of rumbling all week. We are 10 miles from a major state highway, but we've had a lot of small earthquakes all around us this past year.

Dog behavior: Tracy, if you have woods around you and water close to you, even if you aren't finding tracks - I wouldn't be surprised if you have a cougar in your area. They travel long distances, but they stop to hunt in areas, even areas that are well populated where you wouldn't expect to find them.
We lost a full grown cow to a cougar attack back in November. The cow bled out and died after being attacked a day or so earlier. We didn't see or hear the attack and don't know exactly when it took place - DH just figured it out when he went to see why she was down, she had long claw marks on her backside. Cougars are so deadly and so silent when they are stalking. We think the attack happened in a wooded area south of us where the cows had been grazing the day before.
He'd seen the cougar back in the summer running across the road between two farms south of us. The game warden said they will stay in an area for awhile and hunt, then move on. It's not the first time they've been spotted in our area.
I'd bet you have a large predator in your area some where. They don't have to be close for dogs to know they're in the area. Bears, cougars, wolves, etc. they all give off scents that other animals can smell for long distances. They mark their territories and the wind carries the scent.
You're right to be careful when your outside. I wouldn't take any chances on being unarmed, if I were you.
