I spent the longest time yesterday looking for a present I got for my husband. It was really irritating that he kept asking me, "Honey, what are you looking for?"
I finally found it.

 - OK, so I found one of them - in my sock drawer - logical place to look, I have hidden a number of small gifts in the t-shirt drawer which is next one down - must have pulled open the wrong drawer in a hurry and tossed it in without looking - just one to go now LOL
But I am SO glad to hear I am not alone - I was really starting to worry there

My mom has always been bad to forget where she hid presents. I remember one summer my sister and I were playing "house" in the laundry room. Imagine our surprise when we found two Barbie dolls in the oven of the gas stove that was stored out there!
One year we came home from school and Mama had forgotten to HIDE the gifts. They were all still in the back of the station wagon. Oh, she was upset when we came in talking about all the great stuff we'd seen back there. Told us if we didn't forget about it she would take it all back!
Sometimes when my sister and I are at her house cleaning out a closet, etc. we'll find things that were hidden years ago and forgotten. Mama just laughs about it now.

Well, you could always start a new Christmas tradition of scavenger hunting. Tell your daughter that there a presents hidden in the house and she has to find them, but you cannot give her any hints or help at all.

I take the approach my mother took. With eight kids in the house, there was absolutely no way she could have hidden our gifts -- there was nowhere in that house that us kids didn't regularly occupy -- so she basically chose one spot, kept them all there, and told us if we wanted to ruin our Christmas, go right ahead -- have a look-see.
Not one of us ever looked, at least to my knowledge.
I chose a spot in our house (the back bedroom) and kept the door shut, but told the boys that that room was off limits, and why, and if they wanted to ruin their Christmas, to go right ahead. They avoid that area entirely. It also saves me "remembering" or "finding" a gift hidden in another place come spring cleaning time
Choose a spot for all gifts, then tell your daughter where it is, and why she should avoid it. She either will, or she won't, it's up to her, but you won't have the problem of trying to remember where everything is stashed, either.

Since I start my Christmas shopping the day after Christmas, I also have Rubbermaid totes in the basement for gifts. As soon as something comes home, it goes in the totes. I also keep a list in my wallet so I know who I have left to shop for. I have all the nieces, nephews, etc listed on it. I check out the clearance racks all year long and when I pick something up, I put it on the list. The three nieces each got two nice outfits from Kohls for 80% off and i paid less than $10 per girl. I check the list to make sure I don't double up and I get more for my money.

i have a personal desk calendar in my bedroom that I can put post it notes on..and when I put something away somewhere I put a postit note on the calendar to remember where it is when i need it..you can use a code on the note so no one else understands what it means..like d#1closet top shelf...d#2 under guest room bed..etc..and if you don't want them to see it, put it inside of an envelope between the nov and dec pages of your calendar and then in dec have it somewhere where you know where it is with all the little notes to where everything is in the envelope..
i also do this to remind myself of other things..like where the garden seeds are for next year, or to remember to send my online friends seeds out of my gardens..i have postit notes on my 2011 June page of my calendar for sending seeds to 4 friends right now

I don't hide it. I put it in my closet, and tell them that if they find out what it is, and I catch them, I'll return it and not replace it with anything else. SO they are not really tempted. They don't want to lose their christmas presents. :-) I don't know why I should have to hide it. I should be able to trust them to be honest, and to do their part to make their own christmas enjoyable by waiting.
Works for me. :-)

Oh, she wouldn't go and look - trouble is we have such a small flat, that there is no one definitive place that she would be able to avoild entirely. The other day she was looking for a new scrunchie - I said to go and get one from my drawer and suddenly remembered I had tucked somethign into that drawer, and then had to say "no don't go I'll get it" She immediately asked why so I said "think, what's happening next week" and she instantly knew that there was something "hidden" there. I know she won't look, but I have to put things in different drawers just because of space LOL

Could you get a plastic tote box and put it in the bottom of your closet? Or even in the corner of your room? If it's not to "hide" it, then keeping it in one place, essentially in plain sight, might even be a family tradition in the making
