If they own a house in the district, whether they live there or not is academic, they are still paying school taxes on the place and as such are not getting a free ride. In fact they would be paying school taxes on two houses and by rights should be able to choose their district.
Oops, this was already said.

Ditto what Cheryl said. They own property. Doesn't matter if they live there. If they are willing to make the extra effort to get their kid to a school that's far away from where he actually sleeps at night, then why not let them?
This is better than what my SIL did for a while. She lives in a terrible part of town - nice house, nice street, awful schools. So she enrolled my niece & nephew in the district where her *sitter* and best friend lived (which was only marginally better, IMO). They got away with this for years, until she divorced their dad and dad threatened to rat her out. Now they're going to a private school, paid by grandma.
I think there's a lot of this going around. When I was a kid there was this one boy who lived outside the district but his mom made a deal with the district to let him go if they paid extra. Other districts in my region have opened enrollment like this. Maybe this boy's parents could discuss it with the superintendent and work it out?

Think also about who you'd actually be punishing.

If they own a home in town, then they pay taxes to that district. They can send their kid there. Why would you want to butt in and hurt the child anyway?

Do they actually own this house in your town? If so, aren't they too paying school taxes on that house?

Ifthey're paying the school taxes on teh house they have a right to send their kid there howeverI would talk to them about the kid being at your house all the time as you should have some type of compensation and not be a free babaysitter which is what I suspect is the reason they are using the town address. Sad how some people have kids and don't try to raise thm!

Here we have school of choice, so it wouldn't matter anyway. I don't see why you are in such an uproar, let the kid get a good education for cryin out loud. His parents pay taxes on a house in the district, let him get the education from it.

Even if the house in town is a shamble, they are renovating it and are paying taxes on it. They may not be able to live in it right now, but by renovating it, they sound like they hope to one day.
As for the boy, bless you for taking the time with him and allowing him a safe haven. If you disrupted anything, that would change. Where would the boy be then?
As for right and wrong, just by being around you and your family, this boy will learn from you. : )

I operate under the same principal my mother did.
Children are not to be burdened with the sins of the parents. They in fact get extra help because of it.
My mother helped a lot of troubled children that way.

Exactly. And anyway, if they own a house in that district, they pay taxes too, and their kid should be able to go to that school.

Please do what you can as you are showing this boy how a home should be. I could take a half page to tell a story about a young boy in Fla. that we took under our wing and helped him stay out of trouble. In this day and time they need all the help they can get. Bless you for helping him. HUGGGSSSS Sam
