Congrats Cindy!

I'm another one of those yo-yo persons...lose a lot, plateau, lose focus, and then gain it back (currently I'm in "back" status).

The thing that ALWAYS gets me in the end is that darned plateau. It's SO frustrating to lose 50 or 60 pounds and then get stuck. No matter WHAT I do, the scales OR inches simply will NOT move again (we're talking months here). I guess I get depressed, lose focus, and before I know it, I'm right back where I started (and I mean EXACTLY where I started...never more).

I didn't notice whether or not you said how long you've kept the weight off or, if you're still in a losing phase, how long did it take you to get to where you are. Did you plateau and, if so, how did you break it?

I'm still losing. I lost 15 lbs between July (really started in earnest in Sept) and Jan. and then between Jan and now, I lost the rest. Plateaus... I have had a couple of them. The tendency is to think you need to change something, but really you need to do what you have been doing, and in a way, redouble your committment to it. I was told by the nutritionist that I saw that plateaus are normal. They come, they go, as your body is readjusting to new realities. So that is what I have done.
I am sort of in a plateau now, but I have been on vacation and not really counting calories or exercising much. Time to get back at it. :-)

Not tracking calories, logging what one eats and tracking activity, is one the main reasons diets fail.

People may think they are eating healthy and getting enough excercise, but until they log what they are doing, sit down and actually do the math, they are only speculating, which usually errs towards the soft side.

Calorieking is a great soruce, the web site is free, the book is around $10.

I have the Calorie King software, and it works for me. I've lost 62 pounds over five years and would like to lose about ten to fifteen more. Entering my foods in Calorie King helped me to learn about portion size and what percentage of my calories are in fat, carbohydrates and protein. I've learned that I have to watch the carbs and keep them below 40% and keep my protein at 30%. And exercise. I use dvd's at home.

I appluad you and all the ones who have lost and you are right, it is a life style change.

I too, lost without exersizing and have the (angle wings arms). I cannot stand or walk much because of back problems. I lost 69 lbs to my goal weight, and was runner-up queen for Texas Tops for 2008.

You always do better when you can add exersize in to loop, healthier too.

I've been losing about 3lbs a week and hit a stop a few weeks ago. My mother spoke to her neighbor (retired nurse) who has recently lost quite a bit of weight. She said that your body thinks the weight loss is something wrong, and kind of goes into starvation mode - halts everything, trying to re establish the old homeostasis. She also said if you just keep going, the weight loss will eventually start up again. So, don't lose hope. Going back to old habits, instead of making lifestyle changes, will definitely get you back to where you started. I'd rather be stuck, thinner than I was before than regain. I didn't get fat in a day - and I figure I won't get skinny that way either!

In the past, when I hit a plateau, I would start measuring instead of weighing to keep down the discouragement. Often the body is changing regardless of the scale. I now also do some type of cleanse - considering the toxins stored away in fat - was feeling that perhaps my system was just getting bogged down that way.

Last week I didn't lose anything, so went on a cleanse the last few days of that week. This week I did lose my prescribed 3lbs! I have a loooong way to go, but hey - I want to be around for that so I'll just keep at it.

I've been keeping up with Cindy over on the Weight Loss Forum, and have looked to her for inspiration during my recent weight loss--25 pounds since last Thanksgiving. I'm now at a comfortable weight of 120. I run (more like SLOG as my brother says--Slow Jog!) or do Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred every day. I eat healthy and feel great. At age 45, I'm probably in better shape now than I've been in my entire life. Congratulations, Cindy, and...Thanks!

2 years ago I was heavy for me. My weight was balooning and I did not know why. Then I started losing weight after coming off one medicine. It was so nice.
Since then I have lost 60lb and am losing weight now, I'd like to lose another 20lb. I have always eaten fairly well, and continue to do so, I am not really allowed to exercise yet since recent surgery, but can walk and have done 5 mins on the eliptical for the first time today. I really need to build up muscle tone/loss again. Not allowed to do much, but just a little each day wth an increase will really help me heal and get my strength back.
I am mostly vegetarian and eat very very little fat.

Thanks for this thread, I can not do body exercises like I want to, yet but I can continue to do a little each day and continue to eat well .

Took my neighbor some veggies this morning and the first thing she said was, gosh you've lost weight.
