Zippers ARE evil!! I still carry emotional scars from catching my neck while zipping up my winter coat as a child.

Around here there are many different orders of Amish.......and each have their own set of rules. There are many different Mennonite groups. This Sunday I ate lunch at a Mennonite Church because they were having a fund raiser for their youth group. A few women wore head coverings, and had the traditional dresses, but most were dressed, as they might say, "English." or "Fancy."
I don't bother with keeping track of which group has which rules. It is their business and it is none of my business. They are all human beings, and I treat them all with the same respect and courtesy,
Like any other group of people, there are some that are better than others. There are some that I would never conduct any business with. But I don't see that as any diffeent than any other group of people.......
(The crime rate is pretty low around here. A few years ago there was actually a murder (ruled in court to be an accidental shooting). Someone did some research, and it had been 20 years since the last murder....and that had beena domestic dispute).

Working in SE PA we had one 'black bumper' mennonite working in our building. Their black cars have all the chrome painted black. The old order still have buggies and look like colorful amish. You can tell driving PA Rt 340 east from Lancaster who is amish VRS the old order mennonites as the hand lawn mowers & black/grey clothing gives way to more colorfull clothing and gas mowers...

Growing up in Easton I remember as a youngster watching a friend's teenager necking w/ his girlfriend & when his mom said it was time to go she jumped up and shook out her headcover for the ride home and my pappy spoke the 'dutch'. By the time I was in highschool we had to go west of Allentown to hear any 'dutch' and everyone was still dressed English...Now you have to go west of Reading...things have changed.

We were Mennonite until someone married a native american from the catholic mission in upper Bucks County...I find graves back to the 1850's so we were shunned b/4 then...I guess we're 'black sheep' Mennonite...My mom's family was Moravian!

I can totally relate to that little bit of observation.

As a very young boy, before I could really grasp the logic of wearing underpants, my mother rescued me many a time from the dreaded zipper after going tinkle. It took more than once, but I did learn.

Old Order Mennonites are just like Old Order Amish except they don't shun, from what I understand.

There are lots more modern-living Mennonites than Old Order. Most of them look the same as you and me and have regular jobs and lives, but practice Anabaptist religious beliefs.

You mean like rules about women not having abortions?

That's pretty mainstream in America, from what I've noticed, and seems perfectly acceptable in the way of arbitrary non-biblical rulemaking........

No, seriously, I have been in the conservative Mennonite church for over 20 years now and if I go to any area that has lots of unfamiliar churches, I can't figure what church they go to either.

When our church ladies go up to Lancaster, Pa to spend a day of fabric shopping, we have 2-3 ladies that are from that area but married men from out church and moved to our area. So us ladies not from Pa, will ask them, " Is she an old older? and we will usually be told, "No, she's a Joe Wenger, or no, she's a Martinite or no, she' s a 49'er. There are splits and resplits. And yes, Mennos do have beards in some churches and yes Amish do almost always have beards unless they aren't married but so do some before they are married, and the Amish that Big Rockpile says drive cars are probably Beachy Amish.

And there are Amish Mennonites and there are Brethern in Christ and River Brethren and Church of the Brethren and Old German Baptist Brethren and they all wear beards and drive cars and you might be confusing some of them with Amish and/or Mennonites.

Don't even try, it's impossible.
And don't forget the Dunkers.

The Catholic church has changed its laws on a few things over the years....

You're not kidding, I accidently did that to my poor son when he was 3 and to this day, hes' 24, he will not allow me to forget it. I traumatized my poor baby

But the kid would have to wait until the very last minute and then he would dance around the commode and he made it very difficult
