I remember Pampers that required pins when my sister was born in 1971.
I used cloth diapers but they were the flat unfolded kind. I could never make the prefolds work well but I did have a dozen I used to add at night as they got older.
I didn't have a washer and drier so I would carry mine over to my MIL's to wash them. I used them for three kids born in 83, 86 and 91. People thought I ws crzy. Even took them to the sitter's w/ the last one. I left ziplock bags and she just put the diaper in like she took it off. I did all the cleaning. But it saved me a BUNCH of money.

We used cloth on our 2, and boy did I get a hard time (this is 19 years ago). I swear my mon thought I was an eco nut. Maybe I was, but it sure saved alot of money too! We used "Indisposables" and I thought they were great. Just checked and they're still making them - http://www.maternalsource.com/Matern...prod34.htm#icd

IMHO, some of you moms are being potty trained quite well. I know because I did the same thing with mine just because I really hated the poopy diapers. I thought that at least by the time they kiddo was really "ready" they already had the idea what the potty was for.

You can't judge all kids by age...some kids can read at 8 months! Some potty train themselves. Some take years to train. I say try it and let your kid set the pace.

My kids have been out of diapers for 7 years, but we CDed, too.
I used Chinese cotton prefolds with Gerber EZ cover diaper wraps, and Kushie AIOs on occasion, too

I use cloth on my 19 month old and I used them on my first son (now 3 1/2 years old) from the time he was about 18 months old until he potty trained at 3. I probably would have used them sooner, but we were living in an apartment in Germany and I already had enough on my plate. So, right before we moved home I ordered one of every cloth diaper I could find off of diaperswappers.com and switched the day we moved back.
I have prefolds, fuzzibunz, kushies AIO, wonderworks, bumgenius 1.0 and 2.0, happy heiny and potty scotty. I hate the kushies AIO, I liked the BG until they were about a year old and the aplix no longer held. The wonderworks leak, the fuzzi bunz are great as are the prefolds. I like to use the prefolds with a snappi, but my husband refuses to put them on or take them off, so the fuzzi bunz get used much more than anything else.
I do use sposies when we're away from home. I love the 365 from Whole Foods.

I am due with my first in a couple of weeks and you would not believe the looks of horror I get when I tell other women that I plan on using cloth diapers. Whyyyyyy? Are you crazy ? I mean, its like they are the ones going to have to wash 'em, you know. So thanks for all of the positive responses, I haven't gotten much support.

Congratulations! I still get that, but there will also be people who say wonderful things. My son's pediatrician was one that really surprised me. When he saw the cloth diaper, he told me that he used cloth too and we starting talking about which styles we liked best and why.

I used cloth diapers for both my babies, who are now 28 and 31 years old. I love the smell of clean diapers, and sitting and folding stacks of fresh warm diapers is very soothing at night.
I was horrified at the thought of putting paper and plastic next to my precious baby's tender skin. Soft, clean cotton... ahhhhh, that's better!
I was spoiled, though. When they were newborns I used Dydee Diaper Service. They took away the bags of dirty diapers and brought me clean, sanitized cloth diapers weekly. They brought little "goodies" too, I remember the Dydee teddy bear.
I wonder if they are still in business.

farmerswife, don't worry about those people. I got the same reaction to breastfeeding, of all things! Totally had to put my foot down to keep the in-laws from feeding DS other stuff before he was ready. All worth it though. He never had a diaper rash ever, unless he ate something he wasn't ready for yet.
