We no longer have a large freezer. Between our diminishing family size, energy costs and my general lack of interest/skill in long-term day-to-day planning, we seemed to be wasting far too much.
Now, we plan about a week at a time. Life, for now, is just too unpredictable.
When our lives are juked around less by work and school schedules, we might return more to long-term storage.

There are whole areas of the country that aren't cold during the winter. And since hunting season ends in the winter, it's nice to have some of it left over for the summer, and for variety.
I don't understand how not freezing or canning makes more time?!? What could be easier than thawing out a portion sized meal from the freezer, or opening a can and heating it.
I have a small 7 cu ft freezer and it hardly uses any energy at all. It's a chest model w/o the defrost cycle, and hardly needs defrosting even in the humid south.
When I cook I frequently freeze a portion for later, it saves time when I need to save it. Also, being able to purchase stuff on sale saves money, and being able to put up the meat means I can purchase it only on sale.
