Pie tragedy

Our Thanksgiving meal preparations went very well, except for my pumpkin pie. I bought a NEW glass Anchor Hocking pie plate a few weeks ago thinking of using it for holiday pies. I baked our pumpkin pie in it Thursday morning before the turkey went in the oven, and just as the time was up and the pie was done we heard a clatter in the oven and found that the glass pie plate had shattered. I had put the pie on top of a cookie sheet when I put it in the oven to bake, something I've seen recommended on cooking shows, and something my mother used to do. So I don't think that is what caused the shattering. And it was not cold when I put it in the oven.

Why did the pie plate break?

Fortunately I had enough makings to whip up another pie and baked the replacement in a Visions Ware glass skillet. (which worked VERY WELL)

So sorry this happened!

I don't know the 'whys' but I think there was another thread a few months ago about glass dishes made in China having this problem. You might search for that thread! "Pyrex" might be a good search topic.

BlueberryChick 11/30/09 01:28 PM

No answers for you, but what a bummer! Glad you were prepared to make another pie. Good job!

GoatsRus 11/30/09 01:31 PM

Apparently it's not uncommon:

I would be returning it for a full refund.

I should have scraped everything into a box and taken it to WalMart for an exchange. But I just didn't want to deal with the hassle. And I didn't have my receipt. I've thought about contacting Anchor Hocking, however......

Wow, I'm surprised at the warning in that article - don't put your pyrex dish under a broiler. I KNOW that I've browned casseroles under the broiler! Hmmm...

Sorry to hear about the mishap. And I'm with you - I hate the hassle of dealing with something like that with a store. Do call Anchor Hocking. They are the ones that should know about this and fix the issue!

I had a Pyrex 13x9" pan do this with a chocolate cake mix in it! What a mess! It was older though. I think I'd read on here before that this is pretty common, as already stated.

Something about the glass dishes get little flaws and chips in them and will eventually explode...sometimes just sitting on the shelf even.

Peace n Quiet 11/30/09 03:04 PM

Sorry to hear about your pie. It's a good thing it was the only thing in the oven at the time, or ALL would be ruined!

I had a pyrex dish explode in my oven once. It was awful, started a small grease fire and everything!

chickenista 11/30/09 03:09 PM

I have had two Pyrex things go boom and a friend of mine had one go for no reason while sitting on the dinner table on Thanksgiving.
One big baking dish went with a chicken in it while sitting on top of the stove cooling and another went with brocoli mac and cheese in the oven.
I am scared to death of Pyrex now.. some were new and some were old.
Shame.. used to be a reliable kitchen product.

pie tins for pies

my pie tradgedy was I baked two pumpkin pies, one for home and one to take to my sister's, my back was turned when the neighbor kid came to the door and my dog took advantage, chewed a hole in one pie and started licking on another. I took the licked pie to my sisters and made my kid eat that piece. The dog later got the piece of the pie at home with the hole in it because TG happened to be her birthday. Lemonade!

Well, it certainly sounds like this is becoming fairly common. I checked the thread GoatsRUs posted and there are a lot of reports like mine. Many people have had really bad burns and cuts --- I'd hate to have one explode when a small child was around. Good grief. I guess I'll have to go back to metal bake ware! Now I won't trust any of my glass bake ware anymore! It is a real shame because it used to be such a nice product.

crashy 12/01/09 09:38 AM

Do you think its because its a new 'model' that that happened? SCARY!!! I have all kinds of pyrex I have had for years and never heard of this.

Common Tator 12/01/09 10:00 AM

My stove is next to the oven. I have taken pyrex pie plates out of the oven and set them on a cool stove burner to cool for years. Once, the pie plate shattered when it touched the cool burner. Another time I had a pie plate shatter in the oven.

On another note, on Thanksgiving, I don't use the oven to roast the turkey any more. I have one of these. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...455281_fpx.jpg

I love it! It frees up the oven for all of my other baking, and puts the roasting turkey conveniently on the counter. I have a very bad back and can't easily bend to tend to a turkey in the oven, or lift it from the oven. Now I can stand comfortably while working on the turkey and keeping an eye on it, basting, etc.

Even if another pie pan shatters in the oven, the turkey won't be effected if it is not there.

just a reminder, Anchor Hocking glassware is NOT the same as Pyrex.

I'd say you got a bad pan--especially since it was new. I'd return it to the store or contact Anchor Hocking.

I use glass pie pans all the time and have had very successful results. I prefer aluminum pie pans, but they are hard to find these days.

ROFL

That is exactly what I would have done! Your story made me chuckle.

I have never had a glass casserole dish break like that, but hear it is happeneing more often than it use to. I would blame it on quality, but then again, I blame a lot of things on quality.

I got rid of all my glass oven dishes when I did not have an oven for 18 months. Now that I have one again, I considered investing in some more, but decided I have enough cast iron, pie tins, enamel covered casserole and baking dishes and such that there is no need to invest in glass ones....

I am glad I made that choice after reading this thread....a good pumkin' pie wasted like that...what a shame.

I got scared of exploding glass a long time ago(a pie plate, nothing in it tho). Now I just use the few glass dishes I have for serving...or dog dishes:D. All the stuff I cook in is metal, either the enamel stuff or the cake pans, or even better my cast iron frying pans. THe metal seems to cook MUCH better anyways, more even and crisper, not soggy, as well as stuff fluffs up better.

Peacock 12/01/09 12:40 PM

I had a pyrex 13x9 pan do this with scalloped potatoes. On Easter, no less. Why it couldn't happen on an ordinary day (and it was used fairly often) I have no clue.

So frustrating, isn't it!

Oh, but I never use anything but glass pie pans. Metal pans don't bake the same, so I'll take my chances.

LOL at the dog story. Mine did that with a birthday sheet cake one year. I had to make another. :(

Seems the Chinese bought Pyrex including the name and product line but changed the long established formula for making the ovenware. One more trustworthy American icon gone to junk for quick China profit...Glen

according to this website-- http://www.pyrexware.com/thetruthaboutpyrex/index.htm this is not true. Pyrex is still manufactured in the USA.
