Mountain Dew - as someone else said - sugar and caffine. I quit drinking it years ago when I learned just how much of each it contains. Not so much with the caffine, as I'm a plain black coffee drinker. However, the amount of sugar made me gasp.
I like regular Coke in the smallest bottle or can that I can get. Like to keep a few of the single serving cans (can't remember the oz amount) in the refrigerator during the summer.
I don't drink "diet" anything. Used to like the flavor of diet Dr Pepper. However, I've read a few things that indicated artificial sweeteners can create a stronger craving for sugar filled items, if a lot of it is consumed. It's been a while, so I don't remember the specifics on it. You may want to google "diet soda" "sugar craving" or "weight gain", etc.
During the summer I like a big glass of water from our well and some ice cubes. Sooooo refreshing!

I can't stand Mountain Dew. Too sweet. Then again, it's probably no worse than other things. Some of my students always have one of those Monster Energy Drinks in their hands. (The huge ones.) I try to tell them how bad those things are for them, but they don't listen.
I guess I'm simple. I like water, iced tea, and coffee (maybe the occasional Diet Coke).
My own kids like water and milk. Soda once in a while.

I hear you, RL!!!
I too hate water! It makes me violently queasy! The erxceptions to that is creek or spring water or water with electrolytes added. I think that is the problem...electrolytes. It throws my balance off or something.
Not too big on soda here.. never, ever, ever Mountian Dew.. all those chemicals to make it day glo green... blech!! shudders.
Juice here, but always cut 50/50 with water. Tea sometimes.
And there are studies that say that the carbonation increases the speed of absorption of rehydration! So, if you are really dry..have something carbonated.

It's also really good with white grapefruit juice in the seltzer. Very refreshing!

one little know fact that a lot of people are not aware of is that you can get very sick or die from drinking too much water..one woman died recently and the lawsuit was discussed on fox news Kelly's court..
a lot of diet plans suggest way more water than is healthy for most people to drink...you are actually putting yourself into a dangerous situation if you drink more than 6 8 oz glasses of water a day
as for the mountain dew..i know people who are hooked and drink it ..yes..like water

Ok, someone else who gets nauseated when drinking water--finally! I've told people that since I was little and no one ever believed me! It DOES make me nauseated unless I have something else in my stomach when I drink it. But no other fluids do that to me, just water. And like RL and Chickenista, I really don't care for water--tap water or even bottled. To me it tastes bad, like metal--even distilled water. And bottled water tastes like the bottle--plasitc-y. The tap water here is so hard I have to delime the fixtures about once a month. And it's so heavily chlorinated that I can smell that bleach smell when I walk into the bathroom. Yeah, the bathroom always smells clean and nice---because of the chlorinated, flouridated water in the toilet bowl! How good for you can it be to drink water like that? Yeah, it may pass some public utility requirements about the ppm of various things, but do you really still want to drink it??
I do drink water however, but usually bottled because it's so bad here. I buy the 5 gal. bottles and have the water crock dispenser on the kitchen counter. Yeah, it's bad to spend $$ on water, but what do you do?
I have never liked Mountain Dew, but I love Dr. Pepper, coffee, milk and unsweetened tea. In that order.

Not only rotten teeth but rotten behavior from all the caffeine with sugar....the parents probably have them put on ADHD meds. just so they(adults) can use it for their own fix....
And us taxpaying folks are probably covering the dental/healthcare financial result of it...
My kids get very little soda...my son is the only one who likes it..and he is banned from caffeine. Water, juice watered down, kool aid watered down and fresh raw goat milk.
Sparkling cider on the holidays.

I can't stand Mountain Dew. I'll drink it if it is free but I prefer root beer or cola myself. I know I drink way too much soda but luckily I have really good teeth I won't drink soda if I am really thirsty. It only makes me more thirsty. I also hate city water especially the stuff at my friend's house. It is thick, taste like chemicals, and is never very cold. A big glass of sweet well water is the most refreshing thing I can think of.

I do the Dew. Hi, I am furholler, I am 39 and I am NOT addicted to Mountain Dew. It is my favorite soft drink, though. What bothers me is all the high Fructose corn syrup which seems to be in EVERYTHING.

Wellllll, I for one, had a big problem with Diane Sawyers "broadcast", me being from the south and particularly from East Ky. So, I did a google search on caffeine and sugar in soft drinks. Mtn. Dew, 3.92 sugar, is some higher in sugar than coke or pepsi 3.38 g, but less than sunkist orange, tropicana twister, mellow yellow and alot less than the energy drinks. Caffeine....mtn. dew has 4.58 g of caffeine. Brewed coffee 13.44, drip 18.12, espresso 51.33. Coke and pepsi "only" around 3.42, also diet drinks have more caffeine.
My point is, yes, it's not healthy to drink any of these soft drinks and for the record, I don't drink Mtn. Dew or any of the others. But the real problem was being overlooked and instead conveniently being blamed on a soft drink. I guess that's my rant for the day , but as you can tell, I have a big problem with Ms. Sawyer's take on the Appalachian people and her stereotyping.

I grew up drinking water pumped out of an underground sulfur water well. This other stuff they call water is anything but that. Folks say our city/county water is good but I can't drink the metal tasting stuff without tea in it. If it wasn't for unsweetened tea, or other choice drink additives, I'd die of dehydration.

I haven't had kidney stones since I stopped drinking tea and started drinking Diet Coke.
And, I had IBS and GERD long before I started drinking Diet Coke. I've only been a Diet Coke fiend for the last 20 years. I'm 50. That's not even half my life. Before Diet Coke hit the market I was a tea drinker.

Annie, I haven't looked recently but the last time I checked Sunkist Orange and Dr. Pepper both had the same amount of caffiene as Mountain Dew.
When I have a migraine and need to absorb the pain meds faster I drink Dr Pepper or Sunkist becaue I don't drink coffee. But that is the only time I drink it. That is why it works for me. I also think I need the sugar at that point.
Like many other things - MODERATION is the key to such things.

There is no sugar in Mtn Dew.
Mountain Dew lists its ingredients as:
Carbonated water
High fructose corn syrup (HFCS)
Concentrated orange juice and other natural flavors
Citric acid
Sodium benzoate (preserves freshness)
Caffeine (55.2 mg per 12 oz.)
Sodium citrate
Gum arabic
Erythorbic acid (preserves freshness)
Calcium disodium EDTA (to protect flavor)
Brominated vegetable oil
Yellow 5
Wikipedia has a long entry on High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) that explains the chemical processes used to manufacture HFCS and how various blends are much sweater than sugar. The article also lists various scientific studies that looked at how a diet high in HFCS affects the human body.
High Fructose Corn Syrup is cheap in the US because of agricultural subsidies given to corn growers.

I grew up drinking Mt. Dew everyday with my grandpa. Now, I ate healthily, and I didn't drink anything like that at home, but I was at my grandparent's everyday while my parents were working. I got my first cavity last year, at 32.

Deb, HFCS may not be sucrose, i.e., table sugar, but it IS a sugar.

I drink almost exclusively water with some coffee and Monster Energy Drinks mixed in. If it were strictly up to me, we would never have soda in the house at all.

That's not really the point. I see it around here all the time. Little kids, toddlers with soda in a bottle or a sippy cup. Their parents don't give them milk or even fruit juice. They get carbonated sugar water. It's hard on developing teeth because of the acid and it's not good for developing bodies either because of the caffeine and sugar. If it was an occasional treat that would be one thing, but it's pretty obvious that it's the norm instead.
