Help identifying found dog
I took in an extremely starved looking dog this morning. Am calling around to all the local places to see if anyone's reported her missing.
I've been calling her a tri - colored beagle, is this correct? How old would you guess her to be? She's very sweet, good with the kids, our large goofy mutt, and didn't mind the cat. Really don't want another dog until the kids are older (4yr, 2yr, and one on the way) but if we can't find the owners, can't find someone we trust to take her........... we'll give her a good home here. She's been following me around everywhere and my wife says she cries quietly if she loses sight of me. http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j1...n/100_4215.jpg http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j1...n/100_4216.jpg http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j1...n/100_4217.jpg |
Yep, it is a beagle.
Around here if one comes across a very starved beagle more thimes than not it is a lost hunting dog. Especially if she seems to bond with you.. I do not know if it is the same where you are. |
Her name is now... Lucky..... She's lucky you found her
|
Beagle and probably not younger than 7. And probably older, saing at least 7 since she seems to possibly have a greying gene which makes the face grey and 7 is uaully the age I see the face lose all colour to that gene.
|
She might have a micro chip embedded in her, perhaps taking her to a vet or shelter, they would check for one and maybe find the owner.
Good luck and God bless you for your kindness. |
Looks like an older beagle to me. Poor girl.

I'm happy you found Snoopina. She looks like a sweet dog. She has kind eyes and a sweet smile.
|
might have some aussie sheepdog in there, but that's mostly beagle
|
Yup, looks like an older Beagle to me too. Thank you so very much for taking her in!
|
I agree with the other posters. Shes a little short in the ear to be pure beagle, but I'd be willing to have her with me if I wanted fried rabbit for supper. Take her for a walk in the outback and see if she'll hit on a track. She might pay for her keep. Fire a gun. If she stays with you, she'll hunt.

Thank you everyone :)
We've left our name and number along with a description everywhere we can think of. We'll see what happens. :) |
beagle
Beagles really like to roam...probably got lost. I'd say 7 or so b/c of graying.
|
Would this be a good thread to remind folks that a collar doesn't help a dog get home without a tag attached? :)
Poor girl... I too would put her in the seven-eight ballpark. Beagles are such sweet little dogs but they are roamers. If she'll let you handle her feet, get her off those high heels before she tears up your floor. And give her a smooch from me because if there's one thing I can't resist, it's a beagle. |
She has a very sweet face!
|
I'm glad you took her in. I found a Foxhound once in my barn that came across the ice from Cananda---it was about this time of year, maybe a bit later and the ice was going out already so it's a wonder he hadn't fallen through. Anyway, he had tags and a phone number and he was from about 20 miles away but he'd been gone for over two weeks! So they can travel. You might want to widen your search. One thing about hunting dogs, people usually value them.
I hope you find her owner--can you imagine how awful it would be to lose a dog that way?---but if you can't I'm glad she has a good home with you. Good dog! Good girl! :) Jennifer |
I agree about checking to see if she's microchipped. She sure looks like a sweetie! I hear beagles can wander far and wide, it's possible she's been traveling for awhile and maybe her home turf isn't where the owners would hear about her being found.
|
My dad raised beagles and that one is a pure bred -- if a little worse for wear. She looks like she hasn't eaten for a while. I agree with the others that she is middle aged.
Now, I know you think you can't have a dog right now, but this little girl found you and she is probably sick of being a work dog and wants to be a family dog. I say, give up the search for her real owners who didn't care enough about her to make her want to stay with them, and take her in. You will get a loyal, loving pooch. Look at her...isn't she sooooooo sweet? She says, "Mister, I've been searching for weeks for my new daddy, and I am so glad I found you! Don't make me go back to huntin' rabbits in the cold, muddy woods!" |
Pretty beagle. I can't see the dog is starved, probably hungry. I,ve seen hunting dogs lost about a week and they will look like a bag of bones. Your beagle has not missed many meals or it would look much worse. Anyway another place to look for ID, is in both ears and the inside of the top and bottom lips may be tattoo........Eddie

With the length of those toenails, I don't think she's been running that far ... you'd think they'd be worn down more. If she was a working/hunting dog I'd expect shorter toenails, though you might have soft soil or something in your area.
I've never known a beagle to refuse food, in any quantities offered. Bet she fattens up pretty quick! |
I dunno....the more I look at her the more I think she may be older than I thought. Maybe it is just dehydration and starvation, or even her natural coloring, but she is starting to look a little older to me.
That doesn't negate my original post...'Please, mister! Adopt me!!!!' |
Thank you for taking her in....I think I would keep her myself! lol
|
It is possible its not starved. Being older, some dogs just loose body weight and mass.
My Jack Russel, rest his spirit, could not maintain body mass no matter what we did through his later years. People could of easily assumed I starved him but luckily my vet knew better. :) Look at his teeth too. His age will show from the wear. |
She looks like a sweetheart. Bless you for taking her in.
She's definitely an older beagle. |
I reckon you are either going to get a phone call from a lovely family who have been hunting everywhere for her (she has obviously been well loved from teh sound of it) or your new dog just found you :)
she's lovely hoggie |

The dog looks ancient to me. Way older than 7. It is entirely possible, as another poster already say, that the dog just looks like that because it's old.

He also literally befriended a bunch of cottontails. They'd be hopping through the lawn, munching grass... he'd be sitting right beside his rabbits with never a disagreement. |
I also agree, older Beagle. She is most likely from hunting stock, they look a little different than "show" type dogs. If you can't find her home, ask your vet if you can bring her over and have them run a scanner over her, to see if there is a microchip. Most all vet offices have scanners. Hopefully, they wouldn't charge you just to do that. They might also give you an opinion of her age. I do agree she is probably over 7.
If you end up keeping her, my guess is you won't regret it. Beagles make wonderful family dogs, great with kids. It sounds like she is bonding with you already. Good luck! |
Should be easy to identify her. Just check her dog license.

We have a beagle & he's 5 years old & already graying, But that still doesn't mean she's not as old as everyone thinks but she could also be younger. Was really surprised when My dog started graying so young. They are very sweet good natured dogs that love to eat so I would think she's been wondering around awhilesince she looks so skinny.
Here after hunting season some fools drop off beagles, it's like they are done hunting them for winter & don't want to feed them all spring & summer, Sad that some people are so irresponsible. I bet she will be really happy at your place with those little one's to play with if you don't find her owner. |
Just wanted to let y'all know that it turns out her owners live down the road a piece. They called the Humane Society this morning who in turn called us. So happy ending for them :)
At least she got a bath and her nails trimmed down out of it! She may show up on a weekly basis now :p |
That's good news! :) Beagles are known for wandering, following their nose. Again, thanks for taking good care of her. Wish there were more people like you out there.
|
My elderly dog is skinny like that, too. He will be 16 soon. I buy all sorts of things to try to fatten him up, but the vet says his kidneys are going, so I guess it's to be expected. I always wonder what people think when they see him, though....
|
Dogs like her are a diamond in the rough. You won't be sorry if you keep her. I also think she looks like an older dog, but what does it matter anyway. She found you...for a reason, somethings are just meant to be. The best dog I will EVER have, found me that way. She's a beagle/chihuahua mix and I could never live without her now. bless you for being kind enough to take the dog in, she obviously is in need of a home. Mary.

How funny!
I thought maybe you were my neighbor! My Beagle had had a bath last week, collar off, we had company and someone let him out, he disappeared! He got loose of his collar last year too and was missing for almost TWO weeks! I called the police, dog officer and humane society. They all remembered me from last year... So anyway. I was crying yesterday am, and dh said someone had probably found him and kept him. I said I sure hoped so and that he wasn't dead in the woods. The poor kids were just so very sad, we have had Roly for 11 years. dh was at the end of the driveway hacking at some ice a bit later and started walking back up the hill and sensed something behind him.... there was Roly, looking spiffy in a new collar! So then after much hugs and licks my dd answered the phone. A neighbor was calling around to see if anyone had found a beagle! She said well, we were missing ours but he came back today! He said well, that is awesome. He claimed to have called the hs and dog officer, but I don't know.... he asked what the dog's name is and she told him. He laughed and said he had been calling him Freckles! btw, I don't know these people or I would have called them. I did call four neighbors who I know. |
So glad you found her home! Dogs can definitely cover some ground, especially when they are scared. Our pit/red heeler cross escaped the yard while we were staying with friends. We didn't realize it for almost 6 hours due to being gone for school and work. We searched everywhere that evening within 6 blocks of the house, hoping she was hanging out somewhere nearby.Called the police dept in the morning and learned that she had ended up wandering along and finally following home a couple of young girls (her weakness) and they had her at their house 12 MILES away!

My guess was that she's around 7 too. Lots of beagles start to grey around 4 years ols, but to be grey over her eyes, I'd say 7. If her toenails are that long, I'd say she was kept in a raised wire pen, which is pretty common for a lot of hunting beagles. Check her pads & see if they feel softer than you'd expect. That's another sign that she was on wire.
I used to judge the 'show' part of a lot of local beagle field trials, and usually asked the owners how old their hounds were, if they were on wire, etc., so I've looked at hundreds of hunting beagles over the years. If you were closer, she could come hang out on my couch. |
