Well, *sigh* you didn't mention food journaling before, so I'm very sorry I brought it up! It is just in my experience, it's the sheer quantity of food that people won't admit eating that is the worst culprit. That and lack of exercise.
Obviously, if that is not the case for you then YMMV. Good luck to you in your research

Tracy, please don't take offense. I totally understand why the first thought would be over eating, not enough exercise, and being dishonest with myself about that. I get it, but there are many people out there just like me, for whom that prescription just hasn't worked. Every time we say that to someone, the resonse is the same. "That is impossible. You are being dishonest with yourself. If you really were eating less calories and exercising enough you would be losing weight. That is just the way it works." If I sound exasperated, that is why. I don't fit into people's understanding of how this deal works, and they don't know what to do with me. Hey, even I don't know what to do with me. But I know that I do journal the food and I do exercise. It just gets frustrating. That is not in any way directed at you. I hope you understand. :-)
BTW, what does YMMV mean? I don't know that one.

Cindy, I am so sorry to hear you are having such problems. It can be so frustrating. You are right there are many people just like you. My sister is one of them, she has to work so hard. My sister has suffered from PCOS and gestational diabetes. When we were young she suffered badly from hypoglycemia. When she was pregnant with her oldest one of the midwives (they rotated through 5 midwives and you weren't assigned any one) gave her a long lecture on eating fast food and sugar because she was overweight and had gestational diabetes. I tell you my sister is one of the most disciplined people I know and she never ate anything but the best and completely controlled her diabetes with diet and exercise. The thought of her touching fast food was ridiculous, people do like to make assumptions though.
I still would have everything checked to see where you are starting. Have you had your thyroid checked lately?

Morningstar, even though I have every symptom of a thyroid problem, every test I ever have comes back "WNL". Docs say their is nothing wrong with my thyroid, and see no need to offer medication. Some people have tried to tell me that I need to be more aggressive with the docs. Another controversy. I seem to collect them! L! Yea, I got the fast food and sugar talk during all of my pregnancies too. My kids call McDonalds "McFevers!" (Because they think it gives you fever!) Whatever my issues are, it is NOT fast food! L!
ETA: I do plan to have everything retested. :-)

I don't know if your insurance covers a naturopathic physician or if you could afford it out of pocket but it might be something worth looking into. I have never researched it, is there a supplement or homeopathic that helps with thyroid? You also could probably harass your primary care for more tests or switch doctors. I have a wonderful OB/GYN that specializes in thyroid issues. Have you checked with your OB/GYN for the tests instead?
As to fast food, we really don't ever eat at them. We went once this year and the kids and I really debated. The preschooler was tired and crying, I didn't have cash for the older kids to go into the store and they didn't want to sit in the car with her, no one thought we should take her in to the store. We had a dance class to get to and no time to spare (I planned poorly that day). So we thought, people do this every day, lets do it. It was so nasty, we all only ate about 1/2. The kids said, mom that made me feel sick, lets not ever do that again.

I have an appointment with a naturopath next wednesday. We'll see what she has to say. I don't have an OB/GYN here since the move, or a "regular doctor" here yet either. But I am going to go hear what the naturopath has to say, and then decide what to do next.
Your kids were nice to you, mine won't even let me consider fast food! (That's what I get for letting them watch supersize me!) L! I guess I shouldn't complain, huh?

Cindy- have you ever read the books, French Women Don't Get Fat & French Women for All Seasons? I suggest you read them and then see what you think. They are very practical and interesting as well. I follow her precept and so far, I am in my late 40's, I have never been overweight.

9 years ago I stumbled upon the Clinic 30 program, it's now called The University X-Cal Weight-loss program, which basically teaches proper food portions and how to eat enough food in the amounts and all food groups needed for nutrition and weight loss. The only thing is that it does "allow use" of synthetics and soy which I am firmly against.
It worked wonders for me. I know you are saying you do portion control and eat healthy foods, but perhaps along the way some of those healthy foods aren't so healthy for YOUR body. Even if the dr's say your thyroid is fine, get your numbers from them and do your own research. There are foods that if hypothyroid will interfere with the thyroid's ability to work right. Avoid those foods if possible, soy is a big one, as well as things in the cabbage family (broccoli, califlower...and so on). There are also foods that will stimulate and aid in repairing the thyroid, but that's a lot more detail than I have time for and I'm still not done with my own research.
If you are doing stimulating exercises and you have adrenal fatigue and/or hypothyroidism it'll counter what your aim is. Instead, if you have either or both of those issues you should be doing non-stimulating exercises like walking, yoga, palates, belly dancing. One good indicator is if you are more tired after your exercise than when you started, you shouldn't be doing that form of exercise. Having both of those issues, after a stimulating exercise I feel the need to crash and sleep, where-as after doing yoga, a non-rushed walk, or belly dancing I feel invigorated.
I need to finish up here and get going, but wanted to toss this idea out to you to see if it interests you.

Thanks all. Reese, can I find more information on food and thyroid function in the book you suggest?
Thanks,
