For what you want, freewebs does sound best.
They do have an option for a simple blog, and mailing lists too.

If anything....it's free, and a great way to learn the basics of web design.

I wouldn't spend any money on hosting, until your site grows to a point that it needs more......(even then there are several fellow HT'ers who run servers that would host you for free)

Buying a domain name would be a good investment.
You can use it with freewebs, and when you are ready for more hosting....just park it on the new server.
That way, your customers/friends won't lose your site if you ever need to move.

there are various free hosts, but if you ever use a free one be careful as they may go down or something. if you use somebody else's space you probably won't get full control of it and you may have trouble setting stuff up. some of the hosting is pretty cheap anyways, you ,may be able to get some hosting for 5.00 a month.

if you don't want to buy a domain name you can get a subdomain of the net(not as good as a domain name but it does work)

also if you want your website to be good in google, you should do SEO(Search Engine Optimization)
if you need help with anything I said here, just ask

I doubt freewebs is going anywhere, they are a very solid host.

I can't speak for anyone else's server space, But I have a reseller account
My users have full control via CPanel
With the following features:

Disk space 100 MB
Bandwidth 1 GB
Php, cgi, perl, front page
FTP access
Fantastico with over 40 Pre-Installed Scripts
3 MySql Databases
5 Email Accounts
5 Sub Domains

Plus, I have the ability to adjust any of the above to meet a users individual needs.

SEO is great to do....And yes I mod all my sites to please the bots......But, first you need a site, then content is king.

I tried to post last night, but I am a new member and I wasn't 'activated' yet!

We use Go Daddy for all of the sites I design and build. It's pop-up and advertisement free, plus you get your own webspace and domain name. There is no need to buy all of the extras - we build ours through Microsoft Frontpage with a mix of html and just normal design it as you see it. Go Daddy can/will hit your for the little extras, but many times you can find free html codes and such to add extras yourself - and not have to pay Go Daddy for them.

Good luck!
