The Last Diet Pepsi

The husband asked me to get him a diet pepsi from the fridge. But I had put the last one in my lunch bag. So, we rustled and tustled for the last diet pepsi. You see, I won't be buying it any more ever. (If husband wants to buy some when he's at work, thats one thing, but i'm never buying it again this year anywhere...)
Husband won after a paper rock sissors contest. LOL! I'm drinkin' water for work today! :p I wonder when the withdrawel symptoms will start showing up?

Momwannabe 01/06/08 01:59 PM

ooohhhh. I would take a pre-emptive Tylenol, just in case!

Good luck.

Ravenlost 01/06/08 02:05 PM

You are probably facing a week long headache, unless you plan on getting your caffiene some other way!

LvDemWings 01/06/08 02:07 PM

You might want to make your own iced coffee or tea to haul around with you. I have cut way back on the diet pepsi by having a cup of coffee in the morning and drinking cold cinnamon apple tea durring the day.

HI Nickie:
Good for you. GIving up sodas is one of the healthiest things you can do. When I gave them up years ago, I had cravings immediately and headaches for a couple of days.

Apple cinnamon tea sounds fantastic.....does it really taste like it or just a hint of it .....and who makes it?

Becca65 01/06/08 04:12 PM

ooo look out, the headaches are the worse.. I have them every single time I try to cut down! And they are bad.. sometimes almost nauseating!
Good luck

LvDemWings 01/06/08 04:12 PM

It has more of a cinnamon flavor than apple. I think Bigelow and Mount of Olives both have a good flavor, aren't bitter and are good hot or chilled.

mike3367 01/06/08 05:08 PM

i stop drinking them on a Friday so by Monday you might not have such bad headaches

Oceanrose 01/06/08 05:23 PM

I'm cutting back my diet coke. Switching to Crystal lite iced tea at home. Baby steps.. Baby steps..

But I'm thinking I'm in a better mood. I am still drinking 1 a day plus some at work, since that's about all we have to drink there.

Becca65 01/06/08 05:28 PM

I'm cutting down too, and drinking more water.. I find that i feel so much better when I don't drink so many diet cokes.

cow whisperer 01/06/08 06:21 PM

We've also cut soda's completely out of our lives! Also "junk" food.... no chips, etc.... The 1st week is the worse.... After that there are no cravings.... I even stopped drinking my 1 cup of tea in the mornings...... Just ice water ALL day!

Shepherd 01/06/08 07:29 PM

Why won't you be buying it anymore?

Its a self challenge---

to see if how well I can live off locally produced and less processed foods---
I love to support local farmers and buisness
And I want to live/ eat more seasonably and substainably.
Having food trucked on from far away doesn't mesh with any of these goals.

pop just doesnt fit the bill! :)

sidepasser 01/06/08 07:34 PM

My doc told me that drinking diet coke/pepsi was one of the worst things I could put in my mouth..he said think about it:

Why would you want to put anything in your body that can dissolve nails, take rust off hubcaps and ruin one's teeth?

Made sense to me..haven't drank a cola product in years now. I have cut back my coffee to two cups in the morning, I quit drinking caffeinated tea and only drink water the rest of the day.

I lost quite a few pounds and quit having those horrid mood swings and thank goodness, have never had any kidney problems or urinary tract problems.

I think it is much healthier to limit or cut out entirely soda...empty calories and no health benefits.

Nickie- Congratulations!!! I cut out the corn syrup, which meant saying goodbye to my beloved Dr. Pepper. I did have a wicked headache the first few days and kind of felt like smacking people (but I work retail, so there's nothing new about that...) However, the few times I have slipped up and had a soda I have felt terrible afterwards, and I've noticed that I don't crave other sweets nearly as much now, plus I am sleeping TONS better without all the caffeine. Keep drinking LOTS of water and enjoy the healthy feeling. Caite

Caite,

You don't have to give it up if you don't want to. There are still a few bottlers that still use sugar instead. There's one in Dublin, Temple and Abliene Texas and West Jefferson, North Carolina.

tamsam 01/06/08 11:55 PM

I drink the store brands of Crystal Lite as it is just as good and cost much less. I get the Target brand of peach and rasberry that has cups in them to make 1/2 gallon at a time but I like to mix one of each and make a gallon. Also if you do or know someone that does the dreaded Wally World they have a bigger selection of flavors. The Family Dollar also carries the packets for a bottle at a time cheap. Sam PS once in a great while I may have a Coke it out and about and stomach gets queezy.

I'd find a different doctor because diet coke/diet pepsi can't do any of those things.

hotzcatz 01/07/08 12:52 AM

Sodas taste really nasty if you aren't used to them. Almost all of them except the diet versions have the evil High Fructose Corn Syrup in them AND they are expensive so why bother with them? Especially when there is coffee, tea, hot chocolate and so many other lovely ways to get ones caffeine, tannin and theobromine.

There is usually a bottle of cold peppermint tea in the 'fridge so that fills in when folks come to visit who expect soda to be in the fridge.

tamsam 01/07/08 01:41 AM

If you put a piece of fat back in a glass of coke tonight the fatback will be gone in the morning. Coke also makes a great windshield cleaner to get the oil off when raining. I don't know what it does to your stomach but it will settle it if upset so it prob isn't all bad. Sam

NickieL 01/07/08 09:59 AM

man oh man, I sure am craving one right now!!

CGUARDSMAN 01/07/08 10:06 AM

I basically have given up my morning diet coke/pepsi and went back to coffee. I was drinking entirely too much on a daily basis and felt the chemicals could be done without.

Chandler 01/07/08 10:09 AM

We tried to give up our Diet Mountain Dews and moved to coffee a while back but we still had withdrawal symptoms even with the caffeine from the coffee. Probably all in our heads but we figured we must be getting addicted to one of the other chemicals in the soda other than the caffeine.

I gave up soda fairly successfully a year or so ago but DH didn't...Let me tell you, the first sip of forbidden soda and I was back on the wagon...I'd like to try it again, though. I've heard you can keep off a bit of weight by cutting out carbonated drinks.

midwsthomestead 01/07/08 10:46 AM

I was a bona fide Coca-Cola and Mountain Dew addict, yes I was. It was so bad with me that we did NOT run out of coke/mtn dew or somebody made a trip to the store(sad, I know...notice I said 'WAS')

I'd wake in the mornings with a 'hangover headache' already, before I could even get up to drink one! That's when I decided enough was enough and figured out how to make sweet tea. The headaches as I kicked the habit were nasty, I took ibuprofen but it didn't help much. Those severe caffeine withdrawal headaches are just plain ugly.

I'm a sweet tea addict now, tis much better! I have a coke when we're out and about, I enjoy it and go forth. If by chance I indulge and drink alot, I feel terrible--that headache in reverse, it's so weird.

Bravo to you, it's a good thing to kick--hang in there!

BAmaBubba 01/07/08 11:00 AM

good for you! Anything with aspartame in it is bad for you, period. Considering one of the compounds in it (a type of wood alcohol) gets metabolized into formaldehyde in your body...yech! You're drinking a chemical that becomes embalming fluid :(

YuccaFlatsRanch 01/07/08 12:18 PM

Gave up soda for green tea. I buy the cheap Wally World bottled water and add one of the Lipton green tea packets to it. My favorite is Mandarin - Mango Flavor with honey lemon being next. I don't miss the Coke/Pepsi at all - in fact I really don't like them any more.

Oggie 01/07/08 12:26 PM

After reading all the bad stuff about Diet Coke, I switched to beer.

But now, I'm getting fat and they won't let me drink it at work.

rileyjo 01/07/08 12:33 PM

There are a couple of Pepsi addicts on staff at the group home where I work. They are both early 20's and I am over 40 years old. I provide care for diabetics so we decided to perform a little informal blood testing on ourselves.

All three of us split a chocolate bar, about an ounce each, earlier in the evening. I drank 2 cups of coffee with sweetener and milk during the shift. They each had a pepsi at the beginning of the shift a few hours earlier. I broke out the glucometer and I tested 5.4 (normal is roughly 5 to 6) shortly after the last coffee and they were both zooming into the 10+ range. They were both shocked and have decided to try and cut back on the pop they are drinking. It could be other factors, I know, but it was kind of scary to see how drinking all the sugar all day everyday can boggle your system.

Jim-mi 01/07/08 12:43 PM

When in the grocery store I have a hard time containing myself from *blurting out* at those with the 12 or 24 packs of that poison in their carts.
A good friend is killing himself with his hugh consumption of *die-it* pepsi.
He doesn't want to hear about the effects of *asper-killer-tane*
Sad.

Bonnie L 01/07/08 12:46 PM

I used to live on Pepsi, then I got the idea from somewhere that it might be one of the triggers for my migraines. Quit cold turkey, got fewer migraines, & lost 10 pounds the first month!

That was many, many years ago & I won't touch any cola. I occasionally - like once or twice a year - have a Sprite or ginger ale. My only vice now is a pot of coffee almost every morning - about 4 cups.

Glad you can contain, the results wouldn't be pretty, not around here, anyways.

The way I see it, people have their poison of choice- be it smoking, drinking, drugs, fried foods, overeating- whatever. If I get to the pearly gates and all I got against me was poisoning my body with diet pepsi then I'm doin' pretty good.

NickieL 01/07/08 02:06 PM

I have a headache right now....!

I did the math, I was drinking anywhere between 2-8 diet pepsi servings a day...sheesh.

MelissaW 01/08/08 06:10 AM

Hang in their friend! We gave up soda well over a year ago, and I'm so glad. You may not believe it now, but after a couple of months, it will seem downright nausiating, overly sweet, and not at all thirst quenching. You may also get the added benefit of not craving as many sweets of other kinds as well. Once your palatte gets used to less sugar, highly sweeted things start to taste really gross. I still like a square of dark chocolate, or a little vanilla ice cream, but milk chocolate, sugar cereals, store bought cookies, and hard candy all taste REALLY bad. Good luck! You can do this!

mark.cheryl 01/08/08 08:12 AM

For me only milk, tea, and water. All natural, all local as well if you make naturally decaf herbal teas.

Throw off the chains of canned/processed/money-stealing drinks. :hobbyhors

NickieL 01/08/08 09:41 PM

Well, I did ok for most of the day--was thristy for one this morning when the water was off but I drank water when I got to work instead. Didn't get a headache untill 8pm this evening.

I switched from soft drinks to fortified wine and I ended up forgetting how to drive. My pants kept going missing too. Craziest thing.

shelljo 01/09/08 03:17 PM

I too have made the "resolution" to give up soda. I quit Diet Dr Pepper a year ago--or so, but unfortunately I switched to "regular" Dr Pepper. So, now...I have to start over with the caffine headaches. But, this is the year, I will quit.
