Any state that's primarily desert, and any where racism is quite prevalent.

We escaped Michigan 3 yrs ago cause of the "industrial" and crime look, NOT TO EVER RETURN!! And I agree Traverse is beautiful, we have family there, and when we lived in MI thats where we escaped to. As a matter of a fact that family is coming down here next week ( 11 hour drive)

First I also never say never, it just gets you into trouble.
But having said that, I wouldn't want to move to NJ, I would probably live in PA and commute to NJ if I needed to.
I grew up in the Catskill Mountains of NY, and left for Florida 25 years ago. I went back once and got caught in a blizzard. That's all I needed to remember why I moved in the first place. But I do miss the mountains (Florida is definitely flat).
Since I can't stand the cold anymore, I would say any state north of the Mason-Dixon line would not be on my hit parade for year-round living also.
And to those who say Florida is to hot, we're having a cold front this weekend and it's going down to the 40's at night (now that's down right frigid ).
And as far as hurricanes, we at least get a weeks notice of it coming, CA with it's earthquakes scare me more. Also any newer home is pretty safe unless your on the coast, which doesn't have much farm land there anyway (unless your growing condos).

I don't have any problem living in any state but if you ask city or country then it would be the country. Don't want or need to live in any city.

I love living where we do in Texas, but if I had the opportunity to live like this in California, I'd take it. I'm from there originally, and I miss the climate and the landscape. Not all of CA is an unending city. I would never want to live in Louisiana or Missouri or Nevada or Florida or Georgia or Tennesse or Virginia or New Jersey.

Anyplace too far away for me to see my grandkids, lol!
Have lived my whole life in the same state, same county, even...and although I'd love to have more sunny days and less rain, I think I'll stay.

Anywhere dry and anywhere cold. <pant, pant....brrrr>
So, I'll stick to the Southeast. If it's not east of the Mississippi and south of the Mason-Dixon, it's out for me. That doesn't include Florida, which is a geographically misplaced state. It's supposed to be hooked on further north...it just got lost.

I will NEVER live in Colorado if I have any say in the matter. I've lived in California, but it would be #2 on the list - too many stupid rules and weirdo's.
After that, NY, PA, and FL.

I can't think of a place I would never go. I'm pretty adaptable.
Yes, it is hot here in Florida but I have to say that Arkansas was hotter. No nice ocean breeze in Arkansas. As far as hurricanes, at least you are warned when one is coming and can get out. The tornadoes and floods in Arkansas give no warning. They just happen.
The downside is the high cost of living--at least where I am. And it is virtually impossible to buy land here in the Keys. Maybe a building lot if you have an insane amount of money, but no acreage for sure.

I should have added to my list Gary, Indiana.
We drive through there on our way to Wisconsin and joke that it's the armpit of the US. One whiff and you'll know why!

Come on down to the metro east of St Louis. I will take you to town that make Gary Indiana look like a great place.
I would start in prob. Washington Park Il, then we would check out, Brooklyn, Venice and of course East St Louis. I would not take to the almost crappy areas Like Sage, lower Granite City or National City.

Why is it so bad? I have been through there (which is different than living there, granted), but I didn't see anything that seemed so awful! Fill us in!

See, I don't make this stuff up. Listen to this lady and heed her advice. Ky. should be the last place you look when hunting land. It rains here. Do you have any idea how many people die in Ky.? Lots. Why take the risk. Oh yea, we use tp here also. Dry tp at that.

I'm pretty open to living anywhere in the world - providing its not to hot and humid in the summer and I don't have to live in or near a city. (lack of posionous critters would be a good selling point too.)
I used to think NJ was horrible because all I had seen of it was the drive from Philly to Atlantic City. Then this past spring we drove from Philly up to see hubby's grandfather's old homstead near Warwick, NY (still an orchard I'm happy to say) and I discoverd that there are some nice rural places.
Have you ever taken the survey at Find your Spot? ( http://www.findyourspot.com/) I'd love to live in some of the places it lists for me!

Oh, now you got me started. LOL
People are just really racist here, it's crazy. Also, my particular area is very unfriendly towards raising your own livestock (even though it's the birthplace of the Nat'l Farmers Union and has a giant monument to the fact, lol). It's very much ruled by the Good Ole Boys Club, and if you aren't a part of it/disagree with them in any way, they can and will ruin your life. They do not care about those less fortunate at all, to the point it is sickening. Add your daily dose of child and animal neglect with a liberal dollop of drug dealing and you've got yourself a great little place to set up shop.
Once in GC, I think it was a thread about racism, I harped a bit about my town... three people guessed it from the description alone and got to talking about the infamous banner that used to hang downtown and the sentiments behind it that still stand. Yeah, it's ugly here.
DH is *trying* to stick it out two more years with his company, then we are so gone. Arkansas is the current plan and I am so ready.
