I was using Avast, but it somehow missed a virus awhile back and my computer was messed up big time.
I found another freebie called Comodo, managed to download and install it.
Removed Avast, ran a Comodo scan and it zapped the virus.
Also use Spybot and Adaware - really good ones....

I use Norton Internet Security but will be upgrading to Norton 360. I discovered years ago that if you try to run Norton AV and have another AV program installed there will be problems.

We have three computers in the house and I take care of several (8-10) others for people. I use, install and recommend AVG, Ad-Aware and Zone Alarm.
AVG for anti-virus
Ad-Aware for spy ware
Zone Alarm for the firewall. You need all 3 security programs.
All are the free editions.

Someone else mentioned it but running multiple virus scanners will bring your machine to a crawl also. AVG and most of the other antivirus checkers do not check for spyware so you should also use one of the ones others have suggested (or use the free windows defender from microsoft). All I use is AVG and Windows Defender and I have great luck. They both provide real-time checking without killing your machine speed. I also occasionally run adaware scans but it does not provide real-time protection. Anyhow, my point is that you need antivirus protection as well as spyware protection. I work as a software engineer and in my shop (which does other sorts of computer maintenance too), I see tons of machines that are hardly usable becuase of the amount of spyware and viruses on them. A few virus *and* spyware scans and the machines are like new.

Avg, adaware se, spybot S&D and hijack this, then again I never had an issue with viruses. I would use linux, I just dont have the time to sit down and really learn it. I have one box here somewhere that has Red Hat 8 running on it.

AVG is free, and excellent. Also try SuperAntiSpyware, Spywareblaster, Spybot. These can all be run on your computer together. You should NEVER run two AV programs together. That can really cause problems, because they'll conflict. Norton is terrible - a bad buy even if it was free!

Best of all is to use Linux. No viruses, no malware at all.

Do not download any of those Fix-it programs that promise to 'clean out your computer', 'make your computer run better', 'tidy up your registry' etc. Many of these are viruses in themselves and can cause tremendous headaches to get rid of. Go only for downloads that others more knowledgeable have tried and recommended. In other words, don't get sucked in by advertising!

Ask your question in the Computer forum here, or at the site below where I can guarantee you'll get excellent advice from several AV experts. Register first for quick responses. It's free.

Panda. It's DD's computer and that's what she uses.

I tried AVG on mine and it crashed it (hence the reason I'm using DD's computer now).

I don't like McAfee or Norton. Many computer geeks have told me they aren't worth having. Unless MaAfee has cleaned up... they used to pack spyware in their downloads.

The problem I have with Ad Aware software is that it labels at least one of my legitimate programs (birding software for my ornithology class) as something that needst to be deleted.
