I have a good friend and she and her daughter both donated.

Why can't you donate if you have gray in your hair?

ah-HAH! I checked their donation link (posted above) and gray hair will be sold to offset costs. I'm okay with that. They might still be able to use mine anyway because it's more brown, less gray. I don't really care, they're a good organization and I'm certainly not using the hair.

and.... you CAN donate colored or permed hair!!

Anybody know of a quick way to find participating salons (besides calling around)? The LOL website doesn't maintain a list.

And--how do they cut it? Do they just whack off a ponytail and leave you with a raggedy 'do', or do they usually style your hair afterward?

Yes, I did. I had very long hair, past my waist. Once it was cut, I liked the short style so much that I have kept it short ever since!

My DS when he was 11 did it. He start at age 8 but a teacher had a problem with a long haired boy and stopped it. change of teachers and he did it.

This was the childs personal first long term goal. we made a big deal about goal setting and it was a real learning time.

learning issues
Goals
peer pressure
grooming
dealing with adults
him teaching
having a difference of opinon and still being respectfull to others.
the News paper but it on the first page and ran it on the first day of school- this stirred teachers to talk about kids doing things to make a difference.

I donated 21 1/2 inches in May 2006. I get a haircut every year for Boy Scout Summer Camp but had a gap in camp from 2001 to 2006! One of my scout moms runs a salon and has done it (LOL trims)many times. I'm blonde with liberal "platinum" and don't care if they sell it- they have to use money for something! Also it is headquartered in my hometown- lake Worth, FL! Anyway she put my hair in about 16 braids and cut each braid. It's only fair to expect the trim for LOL to be free- I paid her for the shampoo and the fine trimming to make my really, really short hair look good!
I won't be donating again any time soon. I like the wash nwear hair- long hair is a PAIN!

Ask around to see if you can find someone locally who has had it done and find out where they had it done. They used to have a list on their website. Must be it was too cumbersome. With mine they just put it in a ponytail at the base of my head, top of the neck and cut right above it, then cleaned up the ends so they were even. It actually made for a cute hair cut but I have wavy hair and kept curling into my face which annoyed me so I grew it out again.
