I ALWAYS shell out for insurance...even if it's not breakable. My auctions, the few that have actually sold, always suggest insurance. If the buyer declined the insurance, then he should be out the $$ because he didn't protect himself.

I don't think you should refund the item since you offered insurance and he declined. I agree with others, make insurance mandatory. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, then make sure you put in your item descriptions, in bold letters: Insurance highly recommended as I cannot be responsible for item(s) once they have left my possession.

Also, since you seem to be a conscientious seller, make sure you don't sell anything that you aren't comfortable with, as is the case with this item. Go with your gut.

If he leaves bad feedback, you have the option to respond and of course buyers will see that he didn't insure though you gave him the option.

Offer to replace the item with an identical one and see how that respond to that.

I agree with the suggestion several others made. Have him ship the broken item back (at HIS expense), and refund after you receive it.
