Posters, there thing called paragraphs

Normally they are a group of sentences that follow a given order.

The first offers a comprehension of a concept, or ideas. The second, third or forth offers a closure (or statement of your version of facts) to that communication or idea. If further idea are to be presented they come within the second paragraph.

The last sentence of the first paragraph is usually a closure of that communication.

When I open a communication that offer 20, 30, or even 50 or so sentences, I just click away and do not read the words you offer.

The human mind need these breaks to understand what is being said. This post, alone is proof enough. Whom misunderstands me now?

Yes, I understand I am not your 3rd grade English teacher, but sometimes your not understood because of the non use of paragraphs.

Of course I am treading lightly here, got enough static from management already.

Messed that title up big time but cannot do anything about it from this end.

:) 'Tis okay. Everyone has their own style of writing!

moopups 02/01/07 07:36 PM

Rose 2005, are you my 3rd grade English teacher? Offer your corrections. I will listen.

None of us are perfect with our grammar, diction, spelling or sentence construction. If it seems to painful to read, I just pass over to the replies to see who can stand it and who can't. Sometimes they make me chuckle and sometimes I just shake my head in wonder, but I always try to remember that the ones with the worst writing abilities are probably REALLY good at something that I can not even come close to mastering. We all are good at something. Some of us just have a hard time with written communication.

Thank you, Rose. I thought I was going to have to say something, and I had alread corrected one of moopups posts earlier today. In my humble opinion, if you're (notice I used the contraction of "you are" here, not "your") going to try to correct others, be sure you're not making blatant errors yourself.

(Oooooh ... hope I got through that without any myself! :))

Peace and smiles, moopup ...

Ooops! I've been quietly notified that I left the "y" off of "already" in the above. Funny! Funny! Funny! :bouncy:

WRITING IN ALL CAPS GIVES ME A HEADACHE, ESPECIALLY WHEN THERE IS ONE WHOLE PARAGRAPH THAT PROBABLY HAS A GOOD 5,000 WORDS IN IT.

Another peeve: people who go on and on and on and never use puncuation at all or if they do it is only at the end of the sentence and even then the sentence never seems to end or the paragraph is so long that i cannot stand to read it anymore and i just skim for the good parts or i just skip it altogether because that also gives me a headache and i am prone to migraines and did you also notice that nothing is capitalized you guessed it another peeve of mine.

'nuther close 2nd is when peeple use 2 many short forms or use 2 much slang 'n' stuff, such as "luv 2 see U". I hate trying to decipher everything a person writes. Everytime someone overdoes that stuff, I wonder: are they trying to be cute or they really did drop out of elementary school? :p

Or maybe I'm just turning into an old crank. :D

doohap 02/01/07 08:06 PM

Rose, you're a hoot! I think I really like you!

O.K., I'll take a small slice ... thank you!

Cabin Fever 02/01/07 08:10 PM

In Texas we have a saying...perhaps you have it in Florida too...it goes something like this...ah, ah, it has to do with a pot and a kettle...ah, ah....I just can't think how it goes right now.

doohap 02/01/07 08:11 PM

It's something like, the pot calling the kettle black?

moopups 02/01/07 08:28 PM

Where is my chocolate cake piece? Right now its a two slice piece of doubled slices of turkey bologna with a single slice of pepper jack slice of cheese between.....

OK, bring on the dragons......

Snowdancer 02/01/07 08:29 PM

Mitch just relax and spend a few minutes checking out this unique museum. When I saw it-I immediately thought of you. :D I think most homeschooling families would also enjoy it.
It's family friendly and virus free-I ran a Mcafee scan after visiting and it came up virus free. :)

Enjoy:
Museum for Mitch

.................I seem to be the only poster hereabouts who uses the Dots to indent for delinating a "new" paragraph . Visually , the indentation allows me to divide up my thoughts into logical units that , Hopefully , will convey a separation of thoughts on the subject under discussuion . Since English was my foreign language in HS I'm not very good at punctuation and i don't seem to be getting any better with age . I try to edit my spelling so I don't present myself as the literary "Quasi Moto" of the website . I'm not dumb , just lazy I suppose . fordy...

doohap 02/01/07 08:37 PM

I understand you just fine, fordy!

Parents, shield your children's eyes from this, they are talking about carrots........

my buddy on another forum types thoughts out like you with using a series of periods between thoughts or 'new paragraps', kinda like this...........Then he continues with what's on his mind.......It's better to read what's no one's mind even if they are 'quasi modo's (sp?) of the grammar world.......what the heck, it's a homesteading website.......It's not a grammar police control site to be expecting lingquistic correction at every turn.
If you don't understand what I just typed.....who cares?

I like Mitch. He is one of my favorite cyberpeople. He always causes me to stop and think after reading his posts.

I try to keep track of my spelling and grammar alot more because I know he might be reading my posted thoughts. Thank you, Mitch, for helping me to be more aware.

I also try to remember that he has been on this earth alot longer than I have, so he may know a thing or two that I don't.

I am thankful for his presence and for the care and guidance I have been receiving from the members of this family.

Thank you.

Edited to add: "Is that the way you like it, Mr. Beeblebrox?"

KYG, I find the 'dancing emoticons" very annoying, just go to 'Tools', 'Internet Options', 'Advanced' tab, scroll down to 'Multi Media', unclick the green marker, left click if you have a right hand mouse, left handers just do the same in your version of reality.

The visual will remain, the motion will stop. What a blessing, its called animation on the screen, may be said another way there, but I am sure you understand this group of words.

You mean like this one... . I finally figured out who you are moopups, your real name is Larry Rawlings, you were my highschool English teacher who I knew moved to Florida. Your favorite word is Jugernaut and you make a point to use it at least once a week. Also taught me the infininately important phrase of "we never assume because it make an As*-out of U and ME. I have used that often in my adult life, thanks! Also do you still wear those horridly tight gym short things with your high socks? Because those were awesome if you still do. :p

Wendy 02/01/07 10:21 PM

Just as bad as all capitals is someone that capitalizes the first letter of each word. Why do they do that??

moopups 02/01/07 10:53 PM

Tinetinesgoat, in your wishes dear, I am not anybody you have ever met, its just a resemblances dear, I have never been a teacher, nor would I chose to be one. My name is Mitch Hearn, a native Floridian, 7 generations deep. I have no involvement in your past history. However if your are cute enought to be see with me...we can talk about it .......PM works.

wilderness1989 02/01/07 11:32 PM

You can't explain paragraphs to someone that does not even know how to use spell check. I see people write a word that they don't think they spelled right and put (SP?) after the word.......wouldn't it be so simple to spell check the whole post? Don't get me started......

Peacock 02/02/07 12:10 AM

Mitch is not correcting anyone's grammar. He's simply offering advice for proper posting procedure. :) It's true, really -- if you want to be read, and get responses, it's better to make your posts pleasant to read.

Breaking up your posts into paragraphs makes them easier to read and understand, easier to skim for those with limited time and short attention spans.

I am a writer...I get paid to know how to do this. I would still hate for my posts to get graded or corrected for style. A reasonable amount of skill comes naturally for me but hey, this stuff is naturally written from the heart. I would hate for anyone to become discouraged from posting on a board because he or she fears criticism of writing abilities. I've read many posts from people that are rife with spelling and grammatical errors but still succeed in communicating useful info and heartfelt emotion. That's much better, IMO, than a sterile, perfectly proper bit of fluff.

In the writing field, we call what Mitch refers to as "white space." It really does make a difference. That's all he wants -- a place to rest his eyes before going on to the next thought. Every reader needs this. With Mitch's particular quirks, his Aspie stuff, he's just more sensitive to it than some, I guess. It's the equivalent of being distracted by background noise.

uncle Will in In. 02/02/07 05:46 AM

Mitch you little rascal. Do you get up at the same time every day to stir the cauldron?? It will be OK if you need a nap now. What the heck, it's time for the chickens to get up now. You might as well do the chores before the nap.

moopups 02/02/07 06:46 AM

Chores? Is that something specific to Indiana?

Ardie/WI 02/02/07 07:30 AM

While I try hard to not misspell a word or whatever, I fail sometimes and I don't get upset if someone else fails too. If I can't understand what someone is trying to convey, I skip the post. Usually, after one try, I can.

I skip posts that are all in caps or have not sentence beginnings or endings. I don't read those with all words starting with a cap either because it gives me eye strain.

As for paragraphs, I don't always do that correctly either, but then it isn't all THAT important.

(Am baking chocolate cookies tomorrow, in case the grumpies show up here!)

via media 02/02/07 07:31 AM

I agree with edayna, who expressed Mitch's sentiment in a kinder way.

It really is difficult to read line after unbroken line on a screen. I don't mind if the post is randomly broken into paragraphs; I just need that break. It keeps me from accidentally skipping lines and helps me easily find sections I want to re-read or quote.

I want cake tooooooo. :Bawling:

Well, my dh might object :p . You sure you have never randomly yelled Jugernaut at a room full of kids? :) A 7 generation Floridian almost puts you with pure gator blood runnin' through you doesn't it?

ceresone 02/02/07 07:46 AM

Lol, I like Mitch's (may I call you that?) style of writing.

I, too often forget, that the "enter" key takes me to another line.

And, I too, don't like a post all in CAPS.

Old?? Old?? I'm so old-well, you get the idea.

Yes, it's definately an Aspie thing. Too much unbroken text is overwhelming.

SunsetSonata 02/02/07 07:54 AM

Some people write posts as if they are talking... for those who write non-stop without any breaks, it reminds me of when a talker has trapped you and won't let you get a word in edgewise. Writing a solid block of print comes across as not being conscientious of the people you're trying to reach - not rude per se, just unaware how difficult it is to follow a million words thrown into a solid block of print. I would like to follow along and get through these posts, but just as often as not, I lose my place and the post loses my interest.

Reading a big huge unbroken box of print makes me feel like I'm trying to focus on and follow every single little nodule in a brick.
