Raeven that is a gorgeous spot you had picked out. I would love that type of kitchen, one you could just take a hose to also... Not sure how practical that would be but if I'm dreaming.... I've been thinking about doing an outdoor kitchen on my back deck. It's big and on the north end I could incorporate this right into the exisiting deck. Was thinking of BBQ style of cooking though. Might have to revisit that now.
growing up I remember admiring my Grandmas old farm house setup. Out her back door off the kitchen was a covered porch - a large covered porch. Probably 20' in every direction, kinda octagon. Had 5 doorways - is that octagon? First door left was out into her side cooking yard, 2nd door went into the attached greenhouse, 3rd went out into the fruit and veggie garden area, 4th into the wood shed and 5th out into her private side garden.. I absolutely loved it. As you went out the kitchen door into this amazing spot you passed her pantry/butler style pantry. Shelves went to the ceiling and she had countertops, drawers and bottom upboards. I would just stand in there and admire all her canning jars. She and I understood each other. The rest of the family thought I was strange for always drooling over her canning jars and what not. She was my gardening inspiration, quilting inspiration and all that I am, I lay at her feet. Sorry for the long narration, just brought brought some happy times/memories there. Was a 100 yr family farm, had the declaration and all. Going to go look at Cindilu's and Elks links.

Great idea, Echoes! (Echos!!) You could have the barbecue, but just incorporate a large, propane burner or two into the mix somewhere. Then you'd have what you need for canning and brewing, too. We had also planned to add an old dishwasher (the septic lines are handy to the site), a double utility sink and tons of secure, varmint-proof storage for dishware, pots, pans and canning equipment.

LOL, wow, what a cool design your grandmother had!! I can imagine how inspired you must have been in such a place and with such a teacher.
I love how this stuff sticks with us. My mother's mother, too, was a homesteading machine. I was in awe of her (and a little afraid, which I think she enjoyed). When I designed my kitchen, I was so drawn to the color combination of white, buttercream yellow and green... I just couldn't imagine a country kitchen in any other colors. A couple of years after it was completed, I was going through some very old color photographs of my grandmother's kitchen. Can you guess what colors it was?

LOL, I have so much of my Grandmothers stuff (Mom's Mom too!) and if it could be painted it was and it's all avocado green... Maybe smidge darker but that color. Obviously it was a color she loved. Nope, I don't use that...

Elk, you're such a sweetie and a soft sentimentalist. It makes you beautiful! <hug!!>
I did truly love my husband, and I will miss him always. But he was a big believer in moving forward -- as am I. I can practically hear him saying in his impatient, Aussie voice, "Get ON with your life, for goodness' sake!!" (Only he wouldn't have said goodness'.) He was the ultimate pragmatist and would not want me to become a living monument to grief over him. And so I won't be.
I stayed in my grief for as long as I needed to, and I can tell you, it was for a lot longer than I WISHED it had been. But you simply can't hurry these things, they just need to take their own time. It's like trying to make bread rise faster. But by dealing with it face to face, I've moved past it at last. Everyone is different, but for me, it's been like sadly waving goodbye to someone who is leaving on a train. They are moving further and further away, even though you wish so much they didn't have to go. Slowly at first, but eventually, they are far enough away that you aren't thinking of them every single moment. Does that make sense?
So now I'm ready for whatever life brings next. I may still build that outdoor kitchen... but it will be based on a new dream and for new reasons. To my way of thinking, life unfolds in whatever way it will... all you can do is ride the pony. My life as it is right now has enough kitchens in it, and I quite love the spot overlooking the pond for just settling in a patio chair with a glass of wine.
So enough of this thread drift -- I'd rather talk about outdoor kitchens, which are very practical and wonderful!! I love everyone's cool ideas!!
But thank you, Elk, for your tender heart.

I would LOVE a summer kitchen, particularly for canning. I am *hoping* to do something at my new place, but it won't be till at least late next year. Too much to do before then.

I love mine, one of the best thing I did. Though do to a very heavy work load this summer, I didn't plan on canning much of anything.
Last fall we insulated it, put in heat and a large exhaust fan. Wanted to make it usable when processing meat in the winter. Haven't had the time to get it put back together yet - but there will be next spring.
