Destructive distillation is covered in a couple of books that Lindsay Books carry and have reasonably priced, one written nearly 100 years past, the other covering what was done in the land down under.
Producer gas could be made from grains as well as wood, however my personal take on it is that the apparatus is kinda large for maximum benefits and best be used for a stationary application..... as far as what kind of mileage a person would get would of course depend on what size setup you use and what type of engine you are powering.....
Lots of folks making noise about alternative fuels these dayz, and be sure the oil companies are out there to discourage EVERYONE from trying to be self sufficient from use of fossil fuels.
All aspects of self sufficentcy are worthwhile to look into.
