Grandfather clock going nuts-won t bong right -help

I bought a used grandfather clock and it is beautiful but it only worked well for a week and now it wont bong the right number of bongs on the hour and it might bong 2 times on the half hour--i know my son wound it up and probably too tight-is it possible it might fix its self-or can i fix it-thanks-Nancy

if you turn the hands on some old clocks when setting you have to stop on the next hour let it chime then on the half hour let it chime so it will be right its better to waite till the time that is close to the time on the clock to set it so it chimes in right order am i makeing any sence
