1995 Jeep Wrangler Rear Diff

Ok, more problems w my rear end...ha ha.

So I have gone thru 3 rear U joints in 5 months.
Thought it was a 'bad part' but uh, no....
Now it makes this grinding gutteral noise especially when I turn.
Took it to the mechanic he said it was going to need a new / rebuilt rear differential to the tune of 1500.00........said it was time for me to get a new car.

What say you?

1500 is insanely high for a rear end swap on a 95 jeep....I'd post a add up on Craigslist for estimates on your repair. I'm sure tons of the jeep enthusiasts would love to fix your issue for a fraction of the cost.

1500.00 isn't a terrible price, but shop around on ebay, craigslist, etc, and see if you can't find the parts cheaper, they are there if you look.
BTW, I read your thread about how many times your Jeep drove away after a collision. I won't get rid of my Cherokee unless it blows to pieces. Jeeps are tough.......and sometimes.........believe it or not........people trying to talk you into getting rid of it, got an eye on it themselves.

Salvage yard. That's what I would do is go to a salvage yard and find a new rear, Many even if they don't have one them selves can find and get one for you. Then a couple jack stands to hold the rear up while you remove the old one and install the new one. biggest job is going to be getting the brake lines loose with out damaging them and then bleeding the system.

1500.00 isn't all that high of a price if it includes the labor. Labor cost is what puts the hurt on YA.

Would you say that the noise I am hearing and the symptoms I have described the problem is the rear differential?

Although I've never seen a rear diff cause a u joint to fail, (professional mechanic) I suppose it is possible. Grinding , growling coming from the rear that is more noticeable while turning could be the diff, but it could be lots of things. Hard to diagnose a vehicle through the Internet. Also, anyone who thinks 1500 is cheap, PLEASE LET ME BE YOUR MECHANIC, and I've got a bridge to sell ya.

I've used this website several times. It's very very useful for tracking down parts at salvage yards: http://www.car-part.com/

Make certain you buy a differential with a gear ratio that matches the front gear ratio on your jeep. So for example, if the front is 3.73 you need a 3.73 in the rear as-well.

If the jeep has been lifted, there is a good chance that the pinion angle is wrong.

I would look at the rear springs and bushing if is lifted you have busted a single spring or bad bushing putting undo stress on u joint. as for noise in diff extra strain on u-joint can cause pinion bearing failure. 95 explorer rear can be swapped in with new spring perches and u-joint adapter.
