Depending on how many changes have been made after the original production run, you may be better off with a rebuild than a NOS pump. the key is to find a shop that will get the timing dead on before they button it up.

A lot of shops take the good enough approach when setting the timing. Cost will depend on the application. A good shop will tell you up front what the cost will be.

A lot of times rebuilding the injector Pump the only thing reused is the housing and it is re-machined. the newer pumps are 30,000 psi. and have to be perfect. if not they can burn your truck down. Older style pumps are a lower pressure and have an acculmalator built in and act as a governor. Some even have a separate pump per cylinder.

The simple is they have it and you don't.

some pumps take some special tools and if they have been properly checked out, the pump stand, is very expensive and many times different pumps take different stands.

but I think for the most part, they have it and you do not and need it,

if every one keeps there price nearly the same and no one deeply under cuts, any one else the party keeps going,

at one time I had rebuild a few pumps and the ones I rebuilt were not that expensive to fix the "bad parts" the parts are very precision, tho,

never had a test stand, but the tractor was my test stand,

I had bought some injection shop manuals from John Deere,

one problem is normally the injection companies will not sell to the end user, and thus no parts no DIY rebuild, (at one time I could buy parts via John Deere, but no any more),

Talking

I do not know the reason for the cost except people pay it for the most part so they charge it. Check out collages and trade schools in the area.
My dad got his pump rebuilt at a college that had a diesel mec. course for a bit less that half the cost of a near by diesel shop cost.

Is it a Bosh pump?

I had my IH 444 injector pump rebuilt last year. Cost me 400 dollars. No one else in a 75 mile area did it. I found the rebuild kit was 30 dollars. He had a whole line of them on his counter to rebuild. I told him, if I did not have the job I had, I would either work for him or have my own rebuild shop!!!
