Will Not Start?

Was in town today. Got in Pickup wouldn't even click. Cleaned up Cables best I could at time. Nothing.

Called Road Service, they Jump me started right up. Get home shut it off nothing.

I take Cables off, cleaned them real good. Good and Tight. Nothing

Get Battery out of my Boat, hook it up, starts right up. Take positive off it runs. So I'm thinking the Battery.

At least I wasn't middle of the woods.

Charging the battery and then load testing it will tell you what's going on. Of course if it's an old battery, it may simply be a typical victim of winter. It's a good idea to have the alternator output checked also to make sure the alternator is charging properly.

Did any warning lights alert you to a potential problem or your gauges? This would be a mute point for me since the "check engine" light has been on in my '97 Ranger for almost 2 years.

I'd clean the other end of cables to if you are able to get to them and inspect the condition of the cables,if there is green junk or swelling I'd think about replacing them as well

Please do not ever again remove the battery cables from the battery with the motor running. It is the fastest way to kill a good alternator. The pulse when you remove the battery cable can exceed 7000V and fry the voltage regulator or the diode pack.

I know this was an old time way to check out a generator.

Do you have a battery charger? If so, charge the battery and try again. If it's still a no-go the battery is dead. How old is it?
