What is the best way to clean sharpening stones?

Most of you know that I buy and sell for a living, both on ebay and at indoor flea markets.

A few months ago, I bought a fairly large lot of machinist's tools. In that lot were about 20 sharpening stones, of all styles, grits and shapes.

These stones appear to have been stored in the dirtiest area of a shop. They are some of the dirtiest stones that I've ever seen. My goodness, these things are filthy with grime, oil and dirt/dust build up.

I've cleaned a few stones using Goop hand cleaner (like Go-Jo) without pumice and a rag. They look and feel great!

Is there a better way to clean these filthy stones???

Is it okay to use Goop hand cleaner on the stones???

Thanks in advance!!! I appreciate the help!!!!

If that is working, great. I do think I would rinse them under water afterwards.

I only have to clean my diamond stones. I have an eraser for that.

Talking

Just plain old warm water with a grease cutting dish soap to cut the oil and a brush with stiff bristles. Scrub them rinse and dry them.

Good idea, Al!

I never even thought of using Dawn. I had some Goop in my work area, and used that.

Thanks, fellas!!!!

I work at a machine shop and we spray 5way lube thru the straw for more pressure and it does a good job. Maybe WD40 or brake cleaner would work good too.
