Replacing ignition switch on 96 toyota corolla

How hard is it to replace the ignition switch on a 96 toyota corolla?

Last night when I was leaving work the key wouldn't turn. After messing with it a while I was able to start the car and drive home. When I got home I couldn't turn the key enough to pull the key out.

It's shut off and the radio stopped so I'm hoping it will start this morning.

Is replacing the switch something I can do without special tools in subzero weather?

Can I just leave the key in the ignition until I can get it replaced?

If its anything like my ford, its a pretty easy job to do, no special tools required.

Graphite powder works best in locks, doesn't gum them up

This morning when I got to work the key turned and slide right out. I stopped at the parts store and got some de-icer/lubricant and squirted a bunch in the switch. It seems smoother but still doesn't want to turn sometimes. I notice that if I push the key while turning it that helps.

The ignition lock is $100 but so is a tow so hopefully it will continue to work.

FWIW, IME it's the key that wears out, not the lock, with Toyotas. Do you have another one?

Otherwise, if I remember right, If you take off the plastic cowling and turn the key, there is a little metal button, you press in with a pointed tool and the ignition switch comes right out.

The de-icer and lubricant seems to be working.

I've got another key but it didn't work very smoothly when I've tried it in the past but that may have been in the door lock. I keep it duct taped to the bumper so that it looks like a repair.
