Car problem has me stumped
I've got a Ford Focus which I'm trying to keep alive for a few more months (it has 235K+ miles on it) and it has developed a problem which has me stumped.
The steering wheel has developed a shake at all speeds. The car doesn't shake, when you put your hand on the dash there's no vibration. FYI, the power steering went out a while ago, not the stumper but might be related.
Even though the car doesn't shake I've checked for a loose wheel, a missing wheel weight, the brake disks, and the CV joints.
Anyone ever have this problem?

Maybe the steering column is going bad, damaged or worn out? Have you checked the steering column for loose fasteners(I'm not sure what kind your car would have), perhaps a nut fell out somewhere or broke?
My boss's daughter just found out the motor mounts were broken in her car. But that wasn't just the steering wheel.

Possibly ball joints.

Could there be a worn bushing in the steering linkage?

1. have the tires balanced
2. have the alignment checked

Swap tires front to back see if it goes away. Cheapest things first.

could be a belt that shifted in a tire, there easily could be a rock bruise on one as well, look at the tires and see if there is any odd wear or bulges on them. If you have a full size spare take one tire off and put on the spare and try it and if it is still there try another until all 4 are eliminated. and if still there after eliminating all tires then you most likly have some a mechanical problem

It can also be a bent front wheel.

My suggestion would be to get all four wheels off the ground and to then start the vehicle and put it in gear. IMO you should be able to see something shake, vibrate or rattle to lead you to the problem.

I'll check those but in most cases they cause the entire car to shake and/or they are not that noticeable at low speeds.
I'll let ya'll know.

I had this happen recently. It was a tire that threw a radial belt (inside). Nothing visible from the outside, but it shook the steering wheel really bad. Had tires replaced and the problem was solved. In your case, perhaps just replace the one tire in front that is bad. Or, at most, two tires. At any rate, I don't think it would be safe to drive it this way due to the heat.
