another generator question

in local paper there is a 3500 hundred wt,,, homelite gen for $75,,,they say runs good but not making enough amps,,,probably needs brushes...
how do you check amps and do they have brushes and how hard are they to get-change..........thanks

To check amps you need an clamp amp meter and a load (motor or heater) to draw the amps off the genny. Then you set the clamp around ONE side of the circuit either L1 or the neutral and read the load. If you use an inline meter you will fry the meter. Probably you should check voltage first

A quick and dirty test can be to plug in a couple of those cheap 500 watt worklamps. If they light up like they do when plugged into a normal outlet that would be a good sign.

Parts may be available online; it seems to depend entirely on the make/model/age.

Sometimes if it sat for a long time it needs to be 'tickled' such as by plugging in a classic / non-variable speed drill, pulling the trigger, then spinning the chuck. Or some people use a 9 volt battery.
