How best to make a small garden tractor

I have 2 around 36in dia wheels with around a 6ion fac with 1in bars. The axle is around2in dia and is cut off around 3in from the wheels. Dont know what they origionally went on. Want to build something like the AC 6-12. There is a new impliment out called The New Pioneer, I think. It looks like a 1 row rideing cultivator, but you can bolt onto it a 123in plow, disc, or cultivator. id also have rear trailing wheels for it also when this impliment wasnt on. I have a F-20 steering wheel and radiator, and a McCormick seat and brace for a corn binder with foot rests, Im wondering what would be the best setup to rig so as to make the engine and trans as compact together as possible. What about brakes.

what are the facilities you have for fabricating, maching and welding of parts? What is your skill level?

Ride. As I said, I wanted to buy a machine put out called, I think The New Pioneer. It looks just like a one horse rideing cultivator, but you can put a disc and plow on it besides the cultivators.

As to facilities, if your meaning a proper shop, I dont have one. I have a torch and a stick welder, angle grinder. I am trying to find a drill press, but havnt as yet.

thoughts that come to mind,

I would most likely consider a modern gas engine, of the Horse power of your choosing,
13 to 20 hp, IMO, for a clutch I would think either a centrifugal clutch or a electric clutch like lawn tractors use for the mower deck, makes it simple, one can make a belt clutch with a tightener, and not that hard, but with limited tools could be challenge,

go from the motor to a transaxel (I think it is Subaru had a small compact trans Axle with the shifter out the back of the trans axle, ( would have some gear reduction from the engine pulley, to the transmission, say a three inch pulley on the engine and a 12" on the trans axle, go and support the drive shafts out of the trans axle, and put a sprocket on them and then to a large sprocket on the axle of the tractor wheels,

by gaining some additional gearing (reduction), you can position the axles to balance the tractor unit over the wheels, (chain size, IMO min of #60 I think #80 better,

(the reason for the reduction, is to get the tractor in to walking speeds, 1 to 5 mph, maybe one faster for transport, If you have a sulky seat on it for riding it,

not sure of the transmission reductions, but if you find a transaxel one can most likely look up the reductions of the speeds,

one could consider a lawn tractor transmission as well, and then sprocket drive it,
at one "Surplus Center" has some hydra static units for sale, and looked like they were out of heaver mowers,

if all your wanting is one speed forward and revers one could use belts and sprockets for one gear ratio, and use a belt clutch with a "reverser" by turning the clutch the opposite way running a different belt to reverse it, look at a belt version of the struck dozer for the clutching idea, for a forward and a reverse system,
(hope this works) http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/a...lt-diagram.jpg
if not go to post # Another Mini-Dozer

with out a differential it will hard to turn as one wheel would need to slip,

some just depends on what one can round up and find and mesh together,

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
one more thought for a walking tractor, I think one possibly could use a transmisison or system out of a rototiller, for the transmission, use the rotor tiller shafts were the tillers are for the drive axels, (may have to chain reduce),
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

depening on the extent of the reverse one needs one may consider a electic starter motor that could engaed to a ring gear for revering it), http://vortexgreenmachine.wordpress....se-and-rollin/

a person with skills and stick to it ness can do a lot with a grinder drill and grinder,,, and a very thick paint job.....mother earth news had plans for one in the 70's, fairly complicated, my gut thoughts (?) on this is it would cost about twice what you could purchase something used for.

Please hunt up pics of the Moline Universal AND Allis Chalmers 6-12 tractors. There both front wheel drive. THEN, Hunt up Pioneer Equip Co, and look for a machine they call the Homesteader. I would want to buy that and hook it onto the back end of the tractor IF it was somewhat steerable like some old horse cultivators. Takeing it off I would have a set of steerable rear wheels, or maybe just one

Would using belts work on a machine that might weigh over 500lbs and be pulling a 10in plow?

Why not get a front wheel drive small car and cut the vehicle in half and then just fabricate a rig that resembles a G Allis Chalmers garden tractor. It would be far simpler to make the skeleton front end for the cultivator and planter and then use a pull disk from a homemade simple drawbar.

post some links would be nice insted of us looking for some time trying to figure out what you want,

belts would work up to about 10 hp unless your dealing with mulpital belts or the larger C and D belts, like some farm machiner uses,

some also depends on where they are at in the power train,

Perk up your imagination and put steel wheels on something like this and use as many parts as you have and end up with a one of a kind. Chain drive the output from the tranny mentioned above to your wheels and cover the engine with a hood. Results should give a dependable garden tractor that resembles a 1940s prototype Allis Chalmers G

go to the address bar, HI LIGHT the URL (web address), by right click the mouse, and then click on COPY,

come to the reply box (where you type your post) and right click after the blinking cursor is where you want it, and click on PAST, the web site here does the rest when one clicks on post button,

or you can go to the little Icons above the reply box, and there is one that kinda looks like earth with a sign on it, click on it, it will open up a box, copy and past your URL or link or web address in that line of that box, and it will shorten it and most likely give it a title like the video above a few posts,
