JD stx 38 lawn mower

I've gotten the engine to run and run well, now when I turn on the electric pto, the mower runs maybe 30 to 45 seconds and then causes the engine to sputter and then stall out. Any suggestions on this latest problem. Thanks.

Disconnect the belt and see if it still does it.Maybe there is a bearing going out on the deck.

Black deck or yellow? DH has a stx 38 with the black deck - more heavy duty. He got it cheap (50$), runs great with minor work, it is "the wagon puller" right now. The black decks are nightmares, ours has new bearings and belt, everything checked and measured, but it doesn't like the blades engaged long. A friend who owns a JD mower dealership said if anything is bent even a little teeenie bit you'll never get the black decks to operate properly. Hmmmmm?

My bets are on a bad electric clutch. Electric clutches are electro magnets. You can check them with a ohm meter to tell if it is shorted out or not.
