propane conversion question

There is the one guys on here who is selling his idea for running a mower on propane-and I was wondering-how many gallons of gasoline equates to a 20# propane tank? I know there is about 5 gallons of propane in a 20# tank, but didn't know if I would get better fuel savings switching to propane.

You actually get less mileage (Btu's are lower) with propane. Ran trucks on it for years in the late 70's. Problem back then was on the older trucks we would burn a valve every now and then. Not sure how the new engines will hold up. But yes you can run it in just about anything that will run gasoline. Generators, mowers, etc. The best I remember is about 10% less for propane but it's been awhile.

How big is the mower? I would not have propane on anything smaller than a 17 hp. You also loose some Hp on propane.

I have a JD 316 that uses about 4 gallons each time we mow...thought about switching to propane, since its cheaper, but if i go through the same 4 gallons, that would equate to a 20# tank, if I am thinking this right...

Highway road taxes.

I don't know how it is done anymore, but it used to be that fuel could be bought with an exemption of road taxes as today with it higher that would mean quite a lower price. One could also simply file on the exemption for X number of gallons per year also.

Ex: in the 1950s and early 1960s we used tractors with gasoline fueled engines. We actually had two overhead fuel tanks on the farm. One held vehicle fuel and the other was strictly for non road use.
