Because gasoline with ethanol is corrosive and the cheaper metal tanks do not have a protective liner. Diesel is a fuel oil and is not corrosive.

Different regulations are in effect for tanks for use to hold gasoline.

Believe it's illegal most places to have gas in a transfer tank in a truck bed. Diesel is a lot less likely to go boom in an accident.

You don't need a special liner. Ethanol eats up gaskets and rubber not steel.
