Homelite super XL chainsaw

This saw has only cut approx 110 cords of wood since I bought it 28 years ago, quit burning wood for about 20 years or so. Has been trouble free until yesterday, the engine overheated so badly, almost to hot to hold, and had to let it cool down. Checked filter, ok, bar oiler was working ok, anybody have this happen or any suggestions, not sure where to look.

I have the same saw and have had it for 20 years.
Sounds like your gas/oil mix was off, lean on oil.
Should be 32/1.

Mine has done that before. I'm surprised it didn't lockup. It's happened twice to me and I blamed it on the ehthanol content in the fuel I bought.
Maybe maybe not.

Replaced the piston/rings both times and it's as good as it ever was.
I just buy premium for it now because around here there is no ethanal in that grade of fuel supposedly.

You can take the muffler off and look at the rings and piston to see how galled they are.

More than likely it was some gunk that partly closed off the high and low speded jet if it sat that long.

If it starts again your good to go (run some cleaner in the gas oil mix) , If not it is time for a rebuild.

Tell that to those race car drivers that burn 100% alcohol. Or all those Brazillians that have been burning ethanol for decades. System just has to be designed for it.
