3 phase 24v dc does not make much sense. 3 phase is AC and high voltage. Jim is likely right.

Automotive alternators are multphase, but the diodes are usually internal.

W has it about right, but I think the field is self excited, and would connect to ground, not the positive battery terminal. A resistance from the field terminal to ground would regulate the current out.

hi

I'm wondering, some of the old systems need an exciter wire to get them started before they can go to full charge. Usually a wire from the battery through the switch that excites the field to get the generator charging at full voltage when the switch is turned on. I'd go to some of the aircraft restoration forums and ask a few questions to some restorers, you just might find some answers that you wont find from hillbilly homesteader want to bees like us. my family has been fliers for decades on both sides, but no aircraft mechanics, but restorers would know everything you need quickly. best wishes, ray

alternators are indeed three phase "generators" the diode pack turns the three phases into dc which are combined into one feed.....an alternator could also be turned into a three phase motor (12-20 volts) by removing the diode pack and feeding current to it...its in an linsey (sp) publication.....

the generator shown looks much like one that surplus center used to sell years ago...may still....they usually had simple information sheets on how to use/convert dc motors to generators......you may try them..

many times the field winding end was brought out externally so that the field winding voltage could be controlled... i would assume (we do it all the time) that would leave the simple + and _ as input(motor) or output(used as a generator.) but paper work would help...

Ace, some of the old dc motors can be run in reverse to produce ac current, we used to make generators from them, by using a gas engine, just like the store bought generators now. ray

Dh says your motors are dc. Can be used to power equipment with a dc to 3 phase inverter.
