hydrolic oil thats not

bought a new john deere skidder and went to get some oil to keep on hand and the parts guy asked if it used hydrolic oil or motor oil for the hydrolics. had to go check the oil and book--both say use john deere plus 50 motor oil for the hydrolic system and this is from the factory, not a slip up. always knew oils were similar but never heard of any one doing this before. anyone else encountered this and anything on the pros and cons.

I have a 1973 Long tractor that uses 30W in the engine, transmission, and hydraulic system.

Best thing about using one oil is only having to keep one oil on hand to meet all needs.

Unlike years ago when some Ford tractors required 3 different lubricants.

Basically, all oils are the same except for the viscosity and additives.

The viscosity would be the only issue.
If you are from the cold climate, 50 may be a bit stiff in the winter months. It could cause a lot of cavitation and ruin some sensitive components. If this is the case, please let the oil get to operating temperature before putting the machine to work.
There are some great multi-viscosity hydraulic oils available that will provide the protection and performance you need.

You can use non detergent motor oil in most any hydrolic if you use the right weight. If you use detergent oil it will foam and may not work as well. If the John Deer plus 50 motor oil is non detergent it will work fine.

Belarus is rated for 15w40 motor oil in all applications. We used a hytran type hydraulic fluid for the tranny and hydraulics because we had it and it limited cross contamination. Worked fine. As old vet said non detergent oils are pretty much multiuse. Heck most river barge/dredgers use veg oil!

All hydraulics in food manufacturing facilities use veg oil.

Engine oil has become standard to use in equipment with hydrostatic drive in them.
