Herculiner?

My husband has a Ford truck, '93 I think. He has been debating having a liner sprayed on professionally or this DIY kit. He asked if I could find any customer reviews. Unfortunately, all I've been able to find are those on the Herculiner site.

Have any of you used this product or anything like it? What did you think? Pros? Cons?

Thanks,
Marilyn

My neighbor sprayed his liner himself. He first scratched up the paint in the bed where the liner was to be sprayed. He said you did not have to get all the paint out, just ruff it up good with some ruff sand paper. He next vaccumed and wiped up all the dust from the scratching of the paint in the bed. Next he tapped up all the areas where he did not want the spray to go. He bought his spray liner by the gallon and I think the cost was 110 dollars a gallon for a colored liner or 90 for a white (it has been a couple of years). He had bought a cheap liner spray gun to spray it in. I watch him spray it in and it look real easy. When you start spraying, know where you want to end up. By this I mean, start spraying behind the truck cab and get it all as you back out toward the tailgate. I believe he said once you open a can, use it or it will go bad. You are unable to save it. The liner is still in good shape and has not pealed up any. There was a guy who opened up a business spraying in liners real cheap. The only problem was, he did not scratch the bed at all and after a few years, people were coming back to him complaining the liner was pealing. Needless to say, he closed shop. So scratch the pa;iant up real good before spraying. This is all I can think of. Later Travis

In addition to sanding & cleaning, you need to solvent wash w/ something like acetone. It may still not last as long as a good PRO job.

Sunday at the hillclimb I was showing my new to me pickup to a member and he opened the tailgate of his 1999 F150. He has a red Line-X sprayed in bedliner applied in 2000 and he hasn't always been kind to it. He does regularly take it to the DIY carwash w/ a pocket full of quarters and washes it very well. It still looks new...

Check out the webpage for POR15 [paint over rust 15] they have a two part bedlner product that comes w/ it's own one time use spray gun for $149.00 but will want you to use their cleaning products and metal prep and you still need to do a very good prep.

I've used the POR15 product, a disocyanate that forms a chemical bond w/ metal that stops rust by keeping moisture away...it works very well but is costly...

I had a thread about do it yourself bedliners in the HT forum. U-Pol Raptor looks like a really nice kit, much better then Herculiner. If you search ebay there is another really nice kit that sprays in, comes with the spray gun and also can be ordered in colors. The better kits are a 2 part product where you add the hardener to it just before applying.

I had several products in mind to do my truck bed when the truck arrived. I don't remember the names of the others since it has been 6 and a half years.
I used Herculiner because it went on sale at a local auto parts box store. I got two gallons for some thing like $85.00. I followed the directions to the letter on the can to apply it. I used the roller and brush that came with the product to install it after tapeing over every place I DIDN"T WANT IT. I've slid bottom boards with bee hives on that bed for 6 years now along with lumber, tractor parts, firewood plus a couple loads of stones & rocks. The coating still looks great on the bed its self and most of the tail gate. It is showing some signs of wear on the leading edge of the tail gate which I will be touching up as soon as I get the last ofthe honey supers installed and have a fee minute.
I still have some in the can after 6 years that is still good. Store it with the lid down so air can not seep in.

I also used it on the mud flap extentions for the truck. It also still looks good despit our living on a gravel road and having to travel mostly gravel roads to our out yards with the bees.

There are close to 110,000 mile of stones, pebbles, ice and salt that have blasted it.

Would I buy the produce again? You bet I would. I would only apply a third coat to the tail gate and a forth on the leading edge.

Thank you very much. I have printed replies to pass on.

Travis, do you have any idea how long ago your neighbor used the product?

MARILYN, I know it was over two years ago and he ordered the stuff out of Colorado. I am leaving on vacation tomorrow for about 3 weeks, so I will not be able to talk to him and answer back till then. Later Jerry
