Talking PTO Problem

Just stopped working on my 1965 Ford 5000. Brush hogging one evening, didn't get finished but shut the pto off came to the shed.
Next morning it would not work any way shape or form.
So what is up with that?

Al

pull the bh pto shaft off. see does pto turn freely by hand?. check to make sure linkage is good on engagement lever. is the lever moving all the way to engagement position?
a good place to ask this is tractorbynet.com. in discussions scroll down to ag and vintage tractors. also try yesterdaystractor.com

Low hydraulic fluid most likely. PTO should not free turn anyhow.

not trying to high jack the thread. just one question. "PTO should not free turn anyhow"
on both my international 444 and nh tn55 the pto turns by hand. while pto is disengaged. is this not supposed to work this way?

some pto's are made to free wheel, the one ross was talking of is a hydraulicly driven unit with a pto brake.

If only we could time travel, sure there is an interesting story behind how that stuff got in there.

I know over the years I've made some rather interesting repairs and workarounds to various equipment that would probably amuse/bewilder some mechanic in future, course scrappers dont really care or notice such things and imagine much of my stuff will head that direction when I am gone.

Talking

1965 Ford 5000 don't know yet haven't got time to fool with it. It has always free wheeled when disingaged. All fulids are up to snuff, they are kept that way and checked often.

Just had my brother come and finish the bh with his 65 Massey.

Hmmm well we've had a few of those 5000 types over the years currently a 6600, and unless the PTO brake is not working you shouldn't be able to spin the shaft freely. Which you wouldn't try with the tractor running of course! (because if the brake is weak you could twist the brake off and start the shaft spinning to tractor rpms, possably taking your hand with it!)
