Ignition switch changeout

I need to change out the ignition switch in my daughter's 88' Nova. I've gotten access to the steering column and can see the ignition assembly. The new part came with some very vague instructions that describe what they call a poke hole that isn't in the ignition housing. I am suppose to push the button in the hole, rotate the switch, and remove it. Then reverse the process to install.
Does anyone have any experience doing this?

Not on that particular vehicle, but the procedure is as described. Somewhere on the body around the lock cylinder you'll find a small hole that a straightened paperclip would go in. That's the poke hole that releases the lock cylinder.

You must be replacing just the lock cyl. part and not the ign switch itself. Look at the new ign cyl and you should see a pin that sticks out which retains the cyl. The pin might be in the pushed in position and will push out when you rotate the key. Try this on the new cyl, you usually have to turn the key to be able to push the pin back in. Hold the new cyl. next to the old and you should be able to locate the pin. Not sure on that car but many require the key to be turned before you can depress the pin, this way it can't be removed to steal the car. After inserting the new cyl you rotae the key and the pin pushes out locking the cyl. in place.
Of course I have to ask why are you replacing the ign. cyl?
