Church sound booth redux

Ok, they have decided that trying to build the booth w/o a center support post isn't going to work.

So here's the thought now. Its going to be 20' long and 7' wide with one support in the middle of the 20' span. In back there will be a 2 X 10 or 2 X 12 ledger board attached to 6" metal studs 16" OC. In front there will be a beam made of 3 2 X 12s setting on 6 X 6 wood post.

Here's my question, can we just hang the joist on the beam using joist hangers? Any time I have done anything like this I have always layered the joist on top of the beam. But doing that would make finishing the "ceiling" a lot more difficult. The only reason I can see this being a problem is the fact all the stress would be on the front of the beam making it wanting to twist. But with all the joist ends against it I can't see it twisting much.

If I am understand you correctly yes on the joist hanger,

I would suggest the front wall or section, guessing you will have a 3 foot, wall or so be a plywood beam. it would add much stiffness and strength to the front of it,

a technical guide, http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sourc...ELf1EBpeVoj41A

some less technical info,

probably one of the better simple guides

jsut make the front wall a beam

yes, just get the correct size for the boards your using and joist hangers are fine. be sure to put nails in all the applicable holes in the hangers. ray

Box beams won't work because we need to hang the joist from the beam not placed on top of it.
