Back from the dead!

Well she sat all winter but I got it running again with a bit of work.
For reasons only I would understand it is going to be my daily ride for a few months. It is running pretty good right now, only trouble is starting after sitting all night. I give it a shot of starting fluid and it starts right up, otherwise I would run the battery down cranking. Once started you are good for the rest of the day, it will fire right up.

I am thinking machanical fuel pump?

What do you guys think?

1986 Toyota 4x4 4 cyl 22R engine, carberator, auto trans, machanical fuel pump.

I suspect a hole in the Diaphragm of the pump. If you could just get a check valve it would save a new pump.

I called Autozone, they have a new fuel pump for $40. Guess I will try that this weekend.

hi

I know you probably checked this but what about the automatic choke? it sounds like it may be staying open and and not working. is there any way you can watch it while trying to start? I've not worked on this engine, but the older US engines you could take the breather filter housing off and see the butterfly valves closed and watch them open as the engine warmed up. We used to close our hand over the top of the carb to act like a choke and pull the extra fuel into the engine side, any way it just sounded like a choke not working with your description to me, hope you get it fixed soon, best wishes ray

Choke is first thing to check and does sound like the problem. Go out in morning, punch gas pedal once to set the choke. Dont try to start it. Take off air cleaner and see if choke butterfly is closed. They will get to sticking open and act like you describe.

If butterfly is closed and you still crank forever, then combo of carb fuel bowl leaking down overnight and maybe weak fuel pump. Oh and on mechanical pumps, when diaphram goes bad they can get to leaking gas into your crankcase which is not good. Your oil level isnt rising is it? Does oil on dipstick smell gassy?

I have checked the choke, it seems fine. I should have mentioned that in my post, it does sound like a choke problem.

I will smell the dipstick, I do recall this issue from an old Ford I had.

Thanks
