metal detector

I'm looking at buying my husband a metal detector for his birthday. It will probably be from ebay. I saw a thread that was posted in 2005, but thought I would pose the question again to see what people would recommend.

It will be used purely for hobby purposes. We live in Flagstaff, AZ, so it's southwest mountain terrain. One of the first places would probably be desert southwest in western AZ, just rocky desert terrain.

We do go to the beach in Rocky Point at least once a year, so it will also get used at the beach.

Thanks for your input.

This is a somewhat current thread on the same topic but in a different forum.

Anyone do any metal detecting?

My opinion, get the best you feel you can afford. Is there gold as far north as Flagstaff? You might take that into consideration for a machine feature.

The local craigslist has a Bounty Hunter IV for $80. What do you think?

Hey, when you get your husband the metal detector tell him to go to the bleachers (if they're the open type) around sports arenas, high school, colleges, etc. You'd be surprised what you can find around there. Tell him to be sure and check with someone first to make sure it's okay. I used to go check under the high school bleachers after a football game and always found some loose change and that was without a metal detector.

There is a forum called http://mytreasurespot.com

I visit there quite frequently, especially when I'm bored. It is a good forum with very good people posting. They seem to be a very helpful bunch of guys.

I'd ask there before buying anything.

FWIW, I bought a used Radio Shack MD, and that thing wouldn't find Fort Knox under a thin layer of sand.

HTH.

Check the new price first, that seems high for a used one.

I don't know about the Tracker IV, but the higher end Bounty Hunters are the best you can get without spending a lot more money. I have a Time Ranger, but haven't used it nearly as much as I thought I would.
