Automatic transmission problems

Does anyone know what would cause an auto tranny to do a long shift between 1-2rd. The engine revs up and then it finally completes the shift. It only happened 3 or 4 times on a long, 480 mile, trip. I checked the fluid, it looks ok.

What kind of car or truck and what tranny and engine? Is the fluid pink or dark colored? In the meantime when it starts to change let up on the gas and let it change then go back on gas. That will let it live a lot longer.Sam

Hey.

If you haven't changed your tranny fluid and filter as prescribed in your vehicle manual, do it now. Driving with old fluid or a partially plugged filter will sometimes cause this problem.

If that doesn't help, you most likely have a tranny pump seal going or something in the valve body is malfunctioning. In general, the hydraulic line pressure isn't holding steady when the tranny is hot.

If you don't do anything now, it will gradually get worse until the tranny gives you a case of whiplash when shifting or doesn't shift at all.

Just bought the truck. Its a 2001 dodge 2500 diesel with the 5spd auto tranny. It has lots of miles on it, but ran fine since I bought it.
I am changing the fluid and filter today.

depending on the type and year it could be the modulater valve sometimes attached to the transmission.

You might try a product called Rislone Stop Slip. Supposed to help stop slipping in auto trans.

Found the problem.
One of the cooler lines was rubbing on the frame. It has a small pin hole in it. I checked t he fluid once on the trip, and it looked ok. But I checked it while in park. Today I checked it in neutral like I was supposed to, and the fluid is way down.

...............Both of the Auto's I drive say too check the fluid level , with the motor ideling while in Park , at Operating temp ! The fluid level on the dip stick will read Higher due too fluid expansion as the temp reaches 150f too 175f . I believe this to be the case for Most autos . , fordy

Many say to check in neutral as their trans don't circulate fluid in park and it will read too high due to drainback of the converter and the cooler. All depends on the manufacturer as does fluid which is very important that you use the correct fluid.
