Speedo on 05 Chevy Silverdo

The speedo on my truck is going goofy. It has stopped going to zero. Sometimes it zeros out at 10 mph, some times it hangs at 40 or anywhere in between. If I subtract the extra speed from what it reads I get the actual speed (tested with stopwatch). I've tried disconnecting the battery for a while but it didn't do any good.

Anyone know what the prob is?

Watcher, your problem is just part of GM's ongoing issues with their vehicles. GM must be sourcing their engineers from ex Lucas employees. The problem you have is so widespread that people are selling their service for repairs on ebay. Here is how to remove the instrument panel for shipping. http://home.comcast.net/~digital_das...o_removal.html

I don't drive the truck enough to spend much to have this fixed. I just look at what the speedo says before I take off then subtract that from my speed to know how fast I'm going. I was hoping it was something simple like a bad speedo cable/sensor

Talking

Could be as simple as a crudded up speed sensor. Pull it out of the trans and clean it up some.

I have a 2005 chevy truck with the same problem. The speedometer and each of the other gauges use what is called a "stepper" motor to run the gauges. It is what is connected to the needles or pointers. Chevy wants 500 dollars to repair or change out the gauge package. You can buy the stepper motors on ebay super cheap and they come with instructions. You have to solder the motors in where they hook up, so you have to be a little mechanically inclined. I have not bought the stepper motors yet to repair my truck, lazy I guess, but I have a GPS I have been using for my speed. Later Travis
