Ford 4000

I may be going to look at a 4000 tomorrow.
It has a front end loader and looks decent enough from the pics.
He says it's a good tractor but that remains to be seen.

Can anyone give me the heads up on what problem spots to look at?

I know nothing about Ford tractors other than it's the size I need and it's in the price range.

The hood on it in looks square, from what I see on 'tractordata.com' for that model years, they were more rounded like the older Fords.

Have of yet, he is hard to get info out of.

Power steering is a must.

Must be a diesel if you plan on using it. The gas burner version is a fuel pig.

I would want the version with the wet inboard brakes. The differential will have two large castings protruding from each side of the differential.

There is a SU version that is very low to the ground. So low that when plowing the tractor will hang up on the ground and get stuck.

the 4000 you are looking at is the second 4000 listed on tractor data. The 3000 has a picture on it that is basically the same tractor just a little smaller.
As was said stay away from it if it's a select-o-speed, great transmission until it acts up then you have to know someone that is familier with them to get it fixed right. If it has a live PTO then it will have a double clutch in it and having had a loader on it this may be heavily worn ($800 or so just for the clutch parts) if it is an independent PTO then no worries as the clutch is reasonably priced.
