International Hyrdo 70

I am having some trouble with our International Hydro 70. It kept spitting and sputtering like it was starving for gas. We would choke it and it would work for a bit but die out again. My tractor mechanic (uncle) said it could be the fuel solenoid that hooks into the bottom of the carburetor. I replaced that at a tune of 40 bucks and tried to test it. It wouldn’t start. Earlier, my BIL had snapped the key off inside the ignition and we have been using a screwdriver to start it since then (insert banjo music). So, I replaced that with a toggle switch so no one else could break another key off. It wouldn’t roll over. Uncle said the starter was bad. We took that off and ran it straight from two different batteries and it wouldn’t even roll over. So, 165 dollars later, I have a rebuilt starter. For some reason, when the starter went bad, it caused the battery to have a failed cell. So, now we have a new battery. After all this trouble, it still continues to starve for gas! Uncle said he was going to look at the carburetor and clean that out and if that doesn’t work then it may need new points. Before I drop more money into parts that may not need to be replaced, is there anything else that may be causing this? I am tempted to rip the tank off, have it cleaned out and put all new fuel lines through it. I would find another mechanic because it’s kind of aggravating when it seems like he’s guessing, but the problem is, he’s the one that everyone comes to when they have tractor problems, so it isn’t like he doesn’t know what he’s doing. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I agree the problem is fuel related. Turn the fuel off at the tank. Remove the fuel line at the carb. open the fuel valve at the tank, the one you turned off. Let the fuel run for a couple of minutes with you catching the fuel. The stream should remain constant and should have a stream about 2/3 rds the diameter of a wood pencil. If the stream is not that good start checking the fuel availability coming out of the shut off valve at the tank. There is trash in the supply system from the tank to the carb. Trash is probably on the tank side of the shut off vavle or at the inlet to the in line filter. You need to become your own mechanic! PS...why does a carbed tractor have a fuel shutoff solenoid?

I have no clue. It says that it's a safety feature. It's suppose to stop the tractor from moving when it's shut off or something.
